Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The relationship between mother and child, or between caretaker and infant, has traditionally been represented as a symbiotic fusion within visual art; see the images of virgin and child by Raphael, for example. Inspired by the English psychoanalyst Melanie Klein, this exhibition takes a dif…ferent view of those early childhood object relations that continue to shape how we relate to others throughout our lives. In addition to love and affection, Klein argues, the bond between the baby and its mother is also marked by aggressions, ambivalences, and strong anxious phantasies. The Mother Position brings together artworks that negotiate the complex nature of this paradigmatic object relation, whose long-term consequences resonate throughout. It is precisely because no artistic practice can do without an object relation that the equally libidinal and destructive object phantasies are worth examining. From this perspective, the fact that social interactions are currently often defined by negative feelings, splits, and one-sided repudiations is not only due to social media and the much-invoked polarization of contemporary society. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Daniel Kehlmann, the most internationally successful German writer in recent years with " Measuring the World" (2006), writes about Cecily Brown's latest paintings in this elegant booklet: " To put it more soberly: Cecily Brown's art shows how superficial and uninteresting the apparent oppos…ition between object and abstraction is. Undoubtedly, constructivism is right about one thing: Out of a jumble of impressions, according to our own not exactly reliable rules, we ourselves assemble a fragile model. After all, we don't simply observe our surroundings, we move through them, thus our external world is perpetually disintegrating, rearranging itself in ever-changing ways, and only the constant work of our consciousness maintains the appearance of consistency. Cecily Brown doesn't defamiliarize the world, she paints it as it actually is, a play of color and shadows." Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. At first glance, Eberhard Havekost's work is determined by discontinuity. Some of his paintings from 2017-2019 are almost perfect in their appreciation of realism. The kangaroo on the title fixes its eyes on the viewer; it appears blinded by the bright light, possibly the headlights of a car…. Its body is frozen, its pose an anticipation of rigor mortis. Some paintings are abstract, combining dynamic and gestural brushstrokes with the scraping-off of paint. In other pictures, colors such as a bright orange, lemon yellow, and scarlet are smudged, suggesting a smoky mist. Sulfurous green appears almost uniform and thus a little yellowish, as if it were seeping acridly and biting through the canvas. Painting becomes a chemical process when Eberhard Havekost removes layer upon layer of paint with turpentine in order to seemingly dissolve it. The images by Eberhard Havekost thus go beyond reality. They revolve around the dissolution of the object and reconstruction, around seeing something and rebuilding it. Yet the image remains an object, soft and hence open to various meanings. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. It was during the 1980s that Leiko Ikemura, who was born in 1951 in Tsu, Japan, first caused quite a stir with her expressive and confrontational imagery within the context of the Neue Wilde. She has since become internationally renowned for her girlish figures unmoored from reality and cosm…ic landscapes filled with fabulous chimerical creatures, as presented in shows at the Kunstmuseum Basel and the National Art Center in Tokyo. In Japan, she is celebrated as an artist who has consistently immersed herself in Western art only to become increasingly aware of her cultural origins and thus arrive at a unique synthesis of both cultures. She is exhibiting works from all her creative periods up to her most recent sculptures on both floors at CFA Contemporary Fine Arts in Berlin. Leiko Ikemura initially studied literature in Osaka and Spain, before enrolling in painting at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes in Seville around 1973. She then lived in Zurich, and moved to Cologne in the 1980s; since the fall of the Berlin Wall, she has also lived in Berlin, where she has held a professorship in painting at the Universitae t der Kue nste since 1991. In her article, Anae l Pigeat writes that the artist still lives, much like the cat within her, in a place where history is palpable on the street, on the exterior skin of the walls and in the behavior of passers-by. In a malleable city in perpetual transition, whose present-day geographies have nothing in common with those at the time of her arrival there. A city where politics is visible on the streets, just like in her work: from the one form to the other.
