Pages remain bright and clear with minimal tanning and foxing. Sticker to front pastedown. Thumb-marking present. Some creasing to gutter. Cracking to gutters, with exposed netting. Boards have mild edge-wear with slight rubbing to surfaces. Soft crushing to spine ends. Light tanning to spine and edges. Water staining and bubbling to rear board. White and brown marks overall. Textblock is shaky. Unclipped jacket has heavy edgewear with some areas of loss, heavy tears, chips and, creasing. Noticeable tanning to spine. Some rubbing to surfaces. Scuffing to edges. Hadfield says in his introduction that in Part I he has 'sought to illustrate the course of human life, from birth to death, by passages of poetry and prose'. In Part II he has 'tried to give some indications of the beauty which can be found outside ourselves'. John Lewis (1912 1996), typographer, book designer, author and illustrator, designed the book with John Hadfield (1907 1999), editor for twenty-five years of the Saturday Book and for two decades a director of the publisher, George Rainbird.
