Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Paperback Edition. The 291 Pages Indexed. Two lines of names and page numbers on title page. Owner's name label plus date on first title page and label is also on some interior pages. No other marks or stamps noted and interior is faultless. While High and Dry focuses on clashes of principles and personalities, especially in the courtroom, it remains very much a story about a river and its world in an arid region. There are irrigators here, including the leading old families of southeastern New Mexico, and there is nature here, including the vampires of the West, the rapacious salt cedars relentlessly sucking up the precious Pecos stream flow. But beneath them all is the author, inviting readers to see how tiny gardens grown for the soul are as crucial to the overall story as the adjudication of water rights. Hall gives a masterful summary of the legal and scientific parts of the story, but he excels in letting us feel and care about water in the same manner as do the people who use it to grow crops. Contents in Nine Chapters: Flying Court, The Tracys' Dream of Carlsbad, Royce J. Tipton Mismeasures the Pecos, Morgan Nelson's Pecos River World, Leave It to Steve, Jean Breitenstein Tackles the 1947 Condition, The Presumption of Charles J. Meyers, New Mexico Stumbles and The Value of Water Inch by Inch Row by Row. Plus Preface, Abbreviations, and Notes.

First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Book is clean with a square, tight binding. Exterior covers show some shelf wear and scuffing. Some staining to exterior page edges and small red stamp on bottom page edges, interior text remains clean with no apparent markings. Book has minor wear on the edges that is difficult to see in the scans. Remnants of a price sticker on back cover. New Mexico lawyer and historian Ralph Emerson Twitchell best described the complicated history of the Pecos Pueblo grant when in 1923 he told a U.S. Senate Committee, "As I have stated all along there are so many things in connection with this entire business that twenty King Solomons can not unravel the knot." Yet in this book Hall does sort through the conflicting claims of land owners and the numerous reversals of opinion by lawyers, administrators, and courts to explain the legal history of the grant under three sovereigns. In the process Four Leagues of Pecos reveals much new and valuable information about the political and economic events in which the history of Pecos is entwined. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Book is clean with a square, tight binding and bright, white pages. Book has minor wear on both covers, spine and spots on page edges that are difficult to see in the scans. The Rio Grande was ancient long before the first humans reached its banks. These days, the highly regulated river looks nothing like it did to those early settlers. Alternately viewed as a valuable ecosystem and life-sustaining foundation of community welfare or a commodity to be engineered to yield maximum economic benefit, the Rio Grande has brought many advantages to those who live in its valley, but the benefits have come at a price. This study examines human interactions with the Rio Grande from prehistoric time to the present day and explores what possibilities remain for the desert river. From the perspectives of law, development, tradition, and geology, the authors weigh what has been gained and lost by reining in the Rio Grande.
