De jurist en letterkundige Van Halmael (Amsterdam 1788 - Leeuwarden 1850), van 1816 tot zijn dood auditeur-militair in Leeuwarden, was, in de woorden van Te Winkel, een echte tooneelman; hij heeft een vijftiental stukken geschreven, werkte mee aan het zeer kritische blad 'De Tooneelkijker' en heeft belangrijke bijdragen geleverd aan de geschiedschrijving van het toneel, vooral ook doordat hij de beroemde acteurs en actrices van zijn tijd persoonlijk kende. Zijn stukken werden volgens Te Winkel echter stelselmatig van het toneel geweerd; zelf schrijft Van Halmael in het voorwoord van 'De hekelaar' dat hij dit stuk niet aan het toneel heeft aangeboden vanwege vroegere teleurstellingen: Noch mijn Treurspel, 'Gerard van Velsen', noch mijne Zinnebeeldige Voorstelling, 'De Echt', enz. hebben de eere der vertooning mogen genieten. Wellicht hebben zijn toneelkritieken hierbij een rol gespeeld. Te Winkel over 'De Tooneelkijker': Hunne scherpe, ja vernietigende, en zeker wel wat overdreven, critiek trof niet zoozeer de tooneelspelers, als wel de stukken, die zij gaven.
