Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Philippe Halsman (Jacket photograph) (illustrator). First Edition [stated]. [14], 241, [1] pages. DJ has some wear, soiling, and edge tear. Signed on half-title page with some bleed through to the title page. Signature has been authenticated and comes with a Letter of Authenticity from JSA [James Spence Authentication] Certification Number XX34894. A loosely formed autobiography by Andy Warhol, told with his trademark blend of irony and detachment. In The Philosophy of Andy Warhol, which, with the subtitle "(From A to B and Back Again)," is less a memoir than a collection of riffs and reflections. He talks about love, sex, food, beauty, fame, work, money, and success; about New York, America, and his childhood in McKeesport, Pennsylvania; about his good times and bad in New York, the explosion of his career in the sixties, and his life among celebrities. Andy Warhol (born Andrew Warhola; August 6, 1928 - February 22, 1987) was an American artist, film director, and producer who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, advertising, and celebrity culture that flourished by the 1960s, and span a variety of media, including painting, silkscreening, photography, film, and sculpture. Some of his best known works include the silkscreen paintings Campbell's Soup Cans (1962) and Marilyn Diptych (1962), the experimental films Empire (1964) and Chelsea Girls (1966), and the multimedia events known as the Exploding Plastic Inevitable (1966-67). He authored numerous books, including The Philosophy of Andy Warhol and Popism: The Warhol Sixties. The book is an assemblage of self-consciously ironic "quotable quotes" about love, beauty, fame, work, sex, time, death, economics, success, and art, among other topics, by the "Prince of Pop". Warhol signed two book contracts in 1974 with Harcourt, one for The Philosophy and the second for a biography of Paulette Goddard, which was never completed. The Philosophy was ghostwritten by Warhol's frequent collaborator, Pat Hackett, and Interview magazine editor Bob Colacello. Much of the material is drawn from taped interviews Hackett did with Warhol specifically for the book, and also from conversations Warhol had taped between himself and Colacello and Brigid Berlin. Warhol promoted the book in September 1975 on a nine-city U.S. book tour, followed by stops in Italy, France, and England. Derived from a Kirkus review: Warhol's immense immersion into the trivia of his life (by way of a tape-recorder he calls his "wife") is undeniably, hypnotically enjoyable. It makes no difference that Warhol seems, or really is, emotionally frozen at fourteen years old. His mind-book is a repository of ideas that may well survive the century -- an indispensable bag of what it's like to spend a crammed Saturday afternoon in Macy's, Woolworth's and Gimbel's shopping for fifteen pairs of jockey shorts and eight pairs of Supphose (all navy). Warhol is his own greatest straight man, with a Buster Keaton deadpan in his far-outness and no sense of put-on. He really believes in himself, his "nothingness," his insecurity, his shopping bags full of candy. He deliberately surrounds himself with love's cast-offs so that he won't be exposed to any real feelings that might make him nervous; he has incredibly long phone talks full of insane minutiae; he plays four TVs at once in his bedroom. This book is the real Warhol -- it wasn't ghosted, but it has benefited from a "redactor's" editing, thank heaven. And it's quotable: "I have a Fantasy about Money: I'm walking down the street and I hear somebody say -- in a whisper -- 'There goes the richest person in the world' . . . Money is my MOOD . . . I don't feel like I get germs when I hold money. . . When I pass my hand over money, it becomes perfectly clean to me." Or, "sex is nostalgia for sex," and "being born is like being kidnapped. And then sold into slavery." Bravura passages of Campbell's soup cans.

Dust Jacket Condition: dj. Illustrated. (illustrator). Very Good (covers nice; contents clean & tight); minor wear (two-inch tear & related creases, crease on front flap) d/j. Large quarto: white cloth, stamped in black, in dust jacket First Edition, first printing. Signed presentation from Irene Halsman Rosenberg on the front endpaper: ?To David & Maida, With very best wishes, Irene Halsman Rosenberg.? Philippe Halsman [1906?1979) was an American portrait photographer. He was born in Riga in the part of the Russian Empire which later became Latvia, and died in New York City. In 1947 Halsman made what was to become one of his most famous photos of a mournful Albert Einstein, who during the photography session recounted his regrets about his role in the United States pursuing the atomic bomb. The photo would later be used in 1966 on a U.S. postage stamp and, in 1999, on the cover of Time magazine, when it called Einstein the "Person of the Century." In 1951 Halsman was commissioned by NBC to photograph various popular comedians of the time including Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Groucho Marx, and Bob Hope. While photographing the comedians doing their acts, he captured many of the comedians in mid-air, which went on to inspire many later jump pictures of celebrities including the Ford family, The Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Marilyn Monroe, María Félix and Richard Nixon. The images in this title were selected by his wife, Yvonne, and his two daughters, Irene Halsman Rosenberg and Jane Halsman Bello. Signed.

Condition: Good. 4to. 21 x 30.7cm.Original wraps.[60pp.].Presentation copy with signed carte de visite.NY Times, June 3, 1979:Among the photography shows opening this week is Philippe Halsman's at the International Center of Photography (Saturday through July 22), the first museum exhibition of this renowned portraitist who has done more than 100 Life magazine covers and several books of collected photographs. "A portrait should give you the possibility of recognizing even stranger and knowing something about him," Mr. Halsman has said, though there won't be any difficulty in recognizing the likes of Albert Einstein, Marilyn Monroe,.Winston Churchill, Gloria Swanson and other notables whose portraits are on view at the International Center. Also, at Light Gallery, new work by Garry Winogrand and Thomas Barrow will be on display starting Friday through June 30. On the occasion of Mr. Winogrand's exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art two years ago, The Times's Gene Thornton praised the photographer's "remarkably sure instinct for fascinating subject matter," which, at Light, are the people and scenes of Greece. M?r. Barrow, whose work links photographic and non?photographic ideas, will be showing prints in which brightly colored spray paints are applied to the emulsion.Text below by Mary Panzer,Curator of PhotographsNational Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution.Philippe Halsman (1906-1979) was born in Riga, Latvia. He studied engineering in Dresden before moving to Paris, where he set up his photographic studio in 1932. Halsman's bold, spontaneous style won him many admirers. His portraits of actors and authors appeared on book jackets and in magazines; he worked with fashion (especially hat designs), and filled commissions for private clients. By 1936, Halsman was known as one of the best portrait photographers in France. From the 1940s through the 1970s, Philippe Halsman's sparkling portraits of celebrities, intellectuals, and politicians appeared on the covers and pages of the big picture magazines, including Look, Esquire, the Saturday Evening Post, Paris Match, and especially Life. His work also appeared in advertisements and publicity for clients like Elizabeth Arden cosmetics, NBC, Simon & Schuster, and Ford. Photographers, amateur as well as professional, admired Halsman's stunning images. In 1958, a poll conducted by Popular Photography named Halsman one of the "World's Ten Greatest Photographers" along with Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Ernst Haas, Yousuf Karsh, Gjon Mili, and Eugene Smith. Altogether, Halsman's images form a vivid picture of prosperous American society in the middle years of the twentieth century. "Philippe Halsman: A Retrospective" is the first historical survey of his work.Halsman's career came to a dramatic halt in the summer of 1940, when Hitler's troops invaded Paris. Albert EinsteinHis wife, daughter, sister, and brother-in-law, who all held French passports, immigrated to America, but as a Latvian citizen, Philippe Halsman could not obtain a visa. For several long months he waited in Marseilles along with many others who were forced to escape fascist Europe. Finally, through the intervention of Albert Einstein (who had met Halsman's sister in the 1920s), Halsman obtained permission to enter the United States, and he arrived in New York in November 1940 with little more than his camera.Halsman's big break came when he met Connie Ford, a striking young model who agreed to pose in exchange for prints for her portfolio.Constance Ford When publicists at Elizabeth Arden saw Halsman's photograph of Ford against an American flag, they used the image to launch a national campaign for "Victory Red" lipstick. A year later, in the fall of 1942, Life asked Halsman to shoot a story on new hat design. To Halsman's delight, his portrait of the model smiling through a feathery brim landed on the cover. One hundred more covers followed before the magazine ceased weekly publication in 1972.When Halsman began working for Life, the magazine was only six years old, and photojournalism was still a new field. Before the existence of Life and its competitors, Americans learned about the world from newspapers, radio, and newsreels. But the new picture magazines published pages filled with bright, dramatic photographs, bringing Americans vivid information that no other media could match. Frank SinatraIn the spirit of a variety show, or a world's fair, magazines combined stories about international politics, everyday life, news events, celebrities, exotic scenery, and humor to prove that "so much of the world, so judiciously selected, had never been seen before in one place." Today, to understand the significance of those great magazines, we need only look at the many forms of mass media that have come to replace them. Now, we find photographs on television and billboards; in special publications devoted to news, people, fashion, or sports; in newspapers; in museums and galleries; and on the Internet. And, ironically, the more places there are to see photographs, the harder it is to attract viewers. But in 1942, when Philippe Halsman's portrait simply appeared on the cover of Life and immediately reached a large, united audience.Surrealism:.In Paris, Halsman studied the work of other artists and photographers, especially the surrealists, from whom he learned to make images that surprised his viewers. By including homely, and ultimately disturbing, details, he gave his subjects memorable tension. Through subtle lighting, sharp focus, and close cropping, he turned formal fashion shots into serious investigations of character. When Halsman posed NBC comedians against bare white paper, eliminating all defining context, their isolation made them look both frail and funny.Salvidor Dali Most important of all, from the surrealists' exploration of the erotic unconscious, Halsman learned how to combine glamour, sex, and wholesome energy in one portrait.

This unusual ability made him Life's favorite photographer for sensual stars like Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot. Halsman's sympathy for surrealism also led to his long, productive friendship with Salvador Dali. Halsman met Dali on assignment in 1941, and over the next three decades they became partners on many projects, including a series of playful tableaux that had all the disturbing irrationality of dreams or a painting by Dali. Their most notable production was "Dali Atomicus", in which the artist, his canvas, furniture, cats, and water all appear suspended in air.Psychological Portraiture:.Over the course of his career, Halsman enjoyed comparing his work to that of a good psychologist who regards his subjects with special insight. With his courtly manners and European accent, Halsman also fit the popular stereotype at a time when Americans regarded psychology with fascinated skepticism. In fact, Halsman was proud of his ability to reveal the character of his sitters. As he explained, "It can't be done by pushing the person into position or arranging his head at a certain angle. It must be accomplished by provoking the victim, amusing him with jokes, lulling him with silence, or asking imp.

These uniquely witty and energetic images of airborne movie stars, politicians, royalty, artists and authors have become an important part of Halsman's photographic legacy. For a period of six years in the mid-1950s, Halsman ended his portrait sessions by asking his sitters to jump. Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, Edward Steichen, Audrey Hepburn, Robert Oppenheimer, John Steinbeck, Weegee, Aldous Huxley, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dalí, Brigitte Bardot and Groucho Marx all took the leap of faith. It is a tribute to Halsman's powers of persuasion that even Richard Nixon, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and other figures not famed for their spontaneity were talked into "rising" to the challenge." Kein Einband. Condition: Sehr gut. This work captures one of the most iconic faces of the 20th century: Andy Warhol, as seen through the lens of master portraitist Philippe Halsman. *** Originally photographed in the 1960s, this particular print was published posthumously in 1989 by Halsman s widow, Yvonne Halsman. *** The work is hand-signed (by Yvonne Halsman), numbered and dated on the reverse, *** With the official photographers copyright stamp marked Philippe Halsman. *** Chromogenic colour print (C-Print) *** This print is part of a strictly limited, numbered edition and was produced from the original negatives under the supervision of the Halsman estate. It is an exceptional example of C-Print technique, combining rich saturation and tonal depth to accentuate the dramatic lighting and textural contrasts of Warhol s face. *** This visually striking portrait of Andy Warhol, infused with bold color gradients in red, yellow, and blue, captures the essence of the Pop Art icon with dramatic intensity. The lighting and color manipulation turn Warhol s familiar face into an almost sculptural, otherworldly image, highlighting both his artistic persona and his deep self-awareness as a subject. *** The work is professionally framed to museum standards, floating mount, within a thick white acid-free passe-partout, in a custom black wooden frame, hand-made in The Netherlands, with Plexiglas® Optical HC, offering UV protection, scratch resistance, and minimal reflection. Size framed : approx. 63 × 53 cm *** The original black-and-white photograph was taken by Philippe Halsman, one of the 20th century s most influential portrait photographers. Halsman (1906 1979) was known for his ability to expose the psychological depth of his sitters while experimenting with surreal compositions and expressive lighting. His collaboration with Salvador Dalí and the legendary jump portraits are among his most famous works. In this portrait, his mastery of visual drama and Warhol s natural theatricality create a hauntingly magnetic image. *** Andy Warhol (1928 1987) remains one of the most transformative figures in modern art. As the leading force behind the Pop Art movement, he blurred the lines between high art and mass culture through his work in painting, photography, film, and print. Warhol became a cultural icon, not only for his art but for his role in redefining the image of the artist as a brand, performer, and visionary. This portrait reflects both his enigmatic presence and his deep understanding of image-making. The piece is more than a photograph it is a fusion of two creative titans. A rare collector s object that embodies the spirit of American visual culture at its boldest. ***WORLDWIDE DELIVERYis also offered, providing a seamless acquisition process for international buyers ***** For further details regardingpricing, and global delivery options, pleaseCONTACT US *** CONDITION : in very good condition ***. Condition: Very Good. Two striking original photographs taken during the filming of Hans Richter's "8 x 8". One of the two photographs is signed in red ink by Philippe Halsman, the photographer of both. A note on the back of the signed photo notes that Halsman signed this picture and that the film's cinematographer Arnold Eagle is visible in the background. The photos are mounted on discolored pieces of cardboard. In his original script for the film's prologue, Richter wrote: ".my film 8 x 8 is a bizarre comedy-drama, signs and sounds not only out of this world probably not even in the next. 8 x 8 mixes equal parts of Freud and Lewis Carroll, with Venice, Venus, and Old Vienna, Cocteau and Bullfights, surrealism, magic, dreams, girls and practically anything else that may currently be in your minds." Hans Richter] undertook [8 x 8] at the suggestion of Marcel Duchamp, a chess enthusiast, after The Minotaur, a planned sequel to the 'Narcissus' episode of Dreams That Money Can Buy, failed to secure funding, although 8 x 8 engaged similar concerns. 'Chess is so universal,' wrote Richter to Jean Cocteau about this new project, 'that practically every human situation has its corresponding move among the countless possibilities of chess.' The filmmaker further recognized a kinship between the work, which took its title from the layout of a chessboard, and Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass. Some of the artists who appeared in this film included Max Ernst, Fernand Léger, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray and Alexander Calder. The photographs are accompanied by a reprint of an article that was written by Lewis Carroll collectors, August and Clare Imholtz, for the Fall 2019 issue of "Knight Letter" about the film and its participants, along with a discussion of each of the photos. The photos are in very good condition. They measure 10.5 x 13.5 inches. PHOTO/062424. Signed.
