Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Fine unread condition dark blue linen boards with gold spine lettering contained in a near fine condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Preface; Acknowledgments; Author Dedication; Selected Bibliography and Index. Illustrated w…ith black-and-white photographs, black-and-white drawings and color illustrated frontispiece plate. "A handbook for skindivers, swimmers, physicians, first-aid workers, shell collectors, biologists, explorers and everyone who works or plays in or on the seven seas." - from the jacket front. "In this guide to dangerous marine animals that bite and are poisonous and venemous to man, Dr. Halstead describes and fully illustrates these marine organisms - their noxious effects, treatment and, of prime importance, how to avoid them. The worldwide geographical distribution and habits are given for each of the Dangerous Marine Animals. Stories concerning dangerous marine organisms ar legion. While these hair-raising tales may be useful in holding an audience spellbound, when a diver at a depth of 100 feet or a swimmer on his home beach suddenly comes upon, or is surrounded by, any of these organisms, he is more concerned with fact than fantasy. The facts Dr. Halstead presents are the result of more than fourteen years' medical research in dangerous marine organisms, particularly those whic hare poisonous and venomous to man. The bluk of his research was conducted for the armed forces of the United States. Personal field research in many of the seas of the world was undertaken to collect this material. However, the work is not limited to the research of a single person, but is fortified by medical histories of individuals and institutions over a period of several hundred years. Every effort has been made to keep technical detail to a minimum, in order to be of practical value to the layman. To the medical man, the biologist, and the first-aid worker, its value lies in the treatments recommended, which are, in each case, the latest accepted practices. The illustrations in this book show the specimen in true form, in its natural habitat, and in detail. Tooth structure of biting marine organisms and the venomous and stinging apparatus of stinging marine organisms are shown. The illustrations are clear and will enable one to identify all parts of the various marine organisms on sight. The material on poisonous-to-eat organisms is carefully prepared and illustrated. Dangerous Marine Animals is divided into sections, as follows: I. Dangerous Marine Animals - Our Knowledge of the Past; II. Marine Animals that Bite; III. Marine Animals that Sting; IV. Marine Animals that are Poisonous to Eat; V. Marine Animals that Shock. The method of presentation is as follows: Bat Ray or Spotted Eagle Ray, Atobatus narinari (Euphrasen) (Illus. Ref.) Inhabits tropical and warm-temperature belts of the Atlantic, Red Sea, and Indo-Pacific Oceans. The above information is followed by Medical Aspects, Treatment, and Prevention. It is not the purpose of this book to throw needless scares into swimmers, boatmen, skindivers, or others who may come in contact with Dangerous Marine Animals, but rather to point out important known facts about them and to show what to do in emergencies. This is a phase of medicine in which the old adage, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," certainly holds true." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.
