Nicely signed and inscribed by the author, historian Robert E. Haltiner (1931-2012), on the dedication page. Otherwise, a near fine copy - clean, bright and unmarked. Uncommon. OCLC (No. 65206495) locates only three copies in collections worldwide - at The Library of Michigan, the University of Michigan and the Library of Congress. ~SP40~ [1.5P] A history of the 'long-ago people' (Native Americans) of Northeast Michigan, particularly in the Alpena and Thunder Bay areas, the product of the author's extensive research as a curator at the Jesse Besser Museum in Alpena, Michigan, and his work in archaeology alongside his father, Gerald Haltiner. It covers topics ranging from Anishinaabe culture and the history of indigenous peoples in the Thunder Bay area to broader North American indigenous histories. Haltiner was the curator of the Jesse Besser Museum for over 30 years, establishing most of their major collections. In addition to this work, he wrote 10 other books pertaining to Alpena and NE Michigan, in addition to stories and articles for various state and national publications.

This book grew out of an exhibition at the local historical museum and is based on vintage photos in their collection. "Countless hours were spent" researching the photos for this book, and the narrative and captions document the city's growth. Located on Thunder Bay on Lake Huron, the city was first surveyed in 1839 and became a lumbering center in its early years. The first photos date to the 1860's. Original publisher's blue cloth covers with gilt spine and cover lettering. This may not have been issued with a dust jacket. There is a short two line owner gift inscription on the upper edge of the front end paper and one small stain on the lower edge of the last page, else This is a nice clean, tight and unmarked book with no interior or exterior markings, no previous owner names and no bookplates.
