This edition has the following notation above the title: 'This is a faithful reprint of a work which produced an extraordinary sensation on its first appearance fifty-one years ago, and was speedily suppressed. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. This is a good-looking two volume set in rather remarkable condition, particularly given its age. You can take a look at the photographs to see that the covers have held up quite well. There is a little bit of color loss in volume 1 near the spine on the front and back. And the spines of both volumes have faded a little bit. The gilt design on the front covers is still quite bright. The gilt design and lettering on the spines is a little faded. Here are several very strong points with regard the condition of the volumes. 1) They are Very solidly bound, square and tight, there are no cracks or webbing anywhere. 2) The pages of the volumes are in excellent condition. There is a light amount of spotting on the inside covers and first front and rear end papers and after that there is absolutely none at all. There's no foxing to be found anywhere in the text of either volume. The pages are close to spotless. I leafed through and couldn't find any spots of soiling. And the pages are not darkened. Here's what I think: these volumes have been in bookcase retirement for over 100 years. The illustrations look perfect, the tissue guards (with descriptions printed in red) look perfect. The downside to this lack of use is that many pages were left uncut. So if you're going to take these books out of retirement and read them you're going to have to possess the skill of neatly opening them up. That's another skill I lack. I should point out that the top edges of the volumes are gilt, and the middle and bottom edges are deckled. You are probably able to see in the photographs that the top and bottom of the spines have some bending and creasing. The top of the spine of volume 2 has a spot of fraying. There are small dents in a few places along the edges of the covers. Surprisingly, there is no rub-through of the cloth at the corners. They are not worn. That's about it. Volume 1 is 393 pages long. Volume 2 is 400 pages long. I'm pricing the set low due to the many uncut pages.
