Black cloth with gilt titles and pictorial dustjacket. Partly paginated. With b&w illustrations throughout, showing images of and relating to the Beggar's Opera and John Gay, including some modern actors; with some musical extracts in text. Very Good in Good jacket, now in clear sleeve. Foxed prelims, tanned and spotted closed edges. Jacket tanned to margins, small loss to spine head, and tears to top edges; part of title underlined in red ink. Pictures available.

Geoffrey Handley-Taylor (1920-2005) was an author and literary scholar, biographer, and among other appointments, Director of the Dictionary of International Biography Company. This is the first edition of the ninth instalment of his Music Book series published by Hinrichsen, focussing on the history of one of the eighteenth century's most famous plays, The Beggar's Opera. Olivier starred in the 1953 film adaptation, where he insisted on doing all his own singing despite the other actors being dubbed. From the library of Laurence Olivier, to whom many books were gifted over the length of his illustrious, industrious, and enduring career as one of the most important figures of stage and screen in the 20th century.
