Add to basketNo Binding. Condition: Good. In German. 1 leaf (two sided. 44 x 30 cm. In acid free Mylar envelope. Yellowed paper. Will be delivered to buyer, by hand, in Manhattan, N.Y.C. only. Would not be shipped.Based on the visible ads and references, this leaf most likely dates to 1938, or possibly very early 1939. One strong indicator i…s the ad for "Deutsche Meisterschaft Berlin 1938" (German Championship Berlin 1938) connected with Walther firearms. Such references to a specific championship year strongly suggest the page was printed during or shortly after 1938. Additionally, the typography, commercial style, and the prominence of consumer goods such as radios, tobacco, watches, insurance, and health remedies are characteristic of late-1930s German print advertising under the National Socialist regime. Nothing on the page suggests wartime austerity conditions (which intensified after late 1939), further supporting a pre-war 1938 dating. This surviving leaf consists almost entirely of advertisements rather than editorial content. One side is headed "Unsere Zemente" (Our Cements), promoting the Süddeutscher Cement-Verband of Heidelberg. Below that appears a dense grid titled :Kleinanzeigen aus dem Reich" (Classified Ads from the Reich), filling nearly the entire page with tightly packed small ads. The layout reflects a highly commercial urban readership. The ads promote a wide array of consumer goods and services: harmonicas (notably the brand Hess), musical instruments, razors ("Rasierklingen"), coffee, books, sewing machines, optical goods, photography services, radios, and household items. Several ads emphasize "Gratis" offers, installment plans, or trial periods ("10 Tage zur Probe"), suggesting competitive retail marketing. Mail-order sales are heavily represented, indicating a well-developed national distribution network.Health-related advertisements are especially prominent. Remedies for hair growth, hearing loss, headaches, bronchial issues, and "Kopfschmerzen" (headaches) appear alongside tonics and pharmaceutical products. These ads use persuasive language promising quick relief or scientific effectiveness. A recurring theme is modernity and technical improvement - products are described as "neu," "verbessert," or "wirksamer". Food advertising is present as well. At the bottom margin is a large, bold advertisement for MAGGI's Fleischbrühe (meat broth), including pricing information ("3 Würfel 9 Pf."). The design uses heavy black bands and strong typography to attract attention. The reverse side continues the commercial emphasis but with larger display advertisements. A prominent Brinkmann Tabak advertisement features bold graphic design and curved decorative lettering. A central box promotes an Uhren-Fachgeschäft (watch specialist shop), claiming expertise and quality guidance for buyers. The ad copy stresses reliability and proper professional consultation. Another large advertisement promotes Hotel Excelsior in Berlin, noting its many departments and concert/dance facilities, including "Thomas Keller" and "Konzert und Tanz." This suggests the hotel was marketed as an entertainment venue as well as accommodation. Its positioning indicates appeal to travelers and possibly to provincial readers visiting the capital. Several ads relate to education and self-improvement: "14 Tage Sprachunterricht" (14 days language instruction), drawing lessons ("Jeder kann zeichnen"), and insurance services. There are also firearms and sporting goods advertisements connected to German championships, reinforcing the 1938 timeframe. Notably, while this leaf comes from Der Stürmer, a virulently antisemitic propaganda paper, these particular pages are purely commercial. The advertisements present an image of everyday German life: consumer culture, leisure, self-betterment, and modern conveniences. The dense arrangement of classified ads reflects the financial model of newspapers at the time, relying on advertising revenue alongside ideological content elsewhere in the issue.

A liberal reward will be paid for the arrest of this party. WM. H. JACKSON, Chief of Police, Cincinnati, Ohio." An important historical broadside of early 20th-century American law enforcement, race relations, and forensic science, The Bertillon System. It deals with high-profile gruesome capital murder cases and a sensational cross-border backdrop. It highlights the high-profile media and police response to an interracial marriage ending in homicide during an era of profound racism. Jones was born in Missouri c. 1873, moved to Cincinnati, worked as coachman and teamster (a driver of horse-drawn wagon teams). In 1905, he shot a Cincinnati police officer and served 5 years in the Ohio Penitentiary. Shortly after his release, on May 31, 1910, he was arrested for assault and battery of a local white woman. The case was dismissed without prosecution. He married Bertha Courtney (referred to in local records as Bertha Jones). On July 14, 1911, Bertha disappeared. On August 4, her decapitated body was discovered in a sewer line in Norwood, Ohio. Police Chief William H. Jackson released this circular on August 8, 1911. Investigators theorized that Jones was a serial killer, connecting him to other local homicides, including the death of an associate, black man named Charles Johnson, who helped Bertha leave Jones. After the discovery of Bertha's body Jones fled to Canada, using the alias "William Campbell" in Montreal. There, in August 1913, Jones (now Campbell) slit the throat of George Muir, the ex-boyfriend of his new girlfriend, Lillie Jackson. He was arrested by Canadian authorities. He was arrested in Montreal for Muir's murder. Ohio never extradited him for Bertha's murder because Canada hanged him on Jan.24, 1914 for George Muir's homicide. The execution drew such chaotic crowds that Canada banned the general public from witnessing future prison executions. See The Woman in the Sewer - on YouTube. The media coverage of the murders and manhunt drew national attention, including The New York Times, with emphasis of the marriage being interracial. decapitating the man, and on March 28, 1935, at Montreal's Bordeaux Prison, the same facility where Charles Jones had been hanged 21 years prior, Tomasina Sarao was hanged along with two accomplices for a murder-for-insurance plot, she was decapitated. The 140 lines of verse are numerated by the author, and a catch-word at the end suggests that more followed or the poet's invention failed him. Three illustrations in pencil are on the middle two pages: one of the hangman, another of the woman in Victorian clothing fallen to the floor, and the last of her lying inside her coffin. A fourth pencil illustration on the last page, depicting the dead woman on the ground, written over by the text. As often with Victorian writing on the subject, the writing is charged with a certain erotic undertone. Public execution was of course the staple of Victorian street ballads, but it is unusual to find such a production by a member of the upper classes. The 'fragment' begins: 'Thus she, though free from guilt & fair & young | Goes, a convicted felon, to be hung | Her pinioned elbows bound behind her back | And bared, all ready for the rope, her neck | They help her mount the cart & her they bid | To seat herself upon the coffin lid'. The execution is described as follows: 'The cart moves on: the rope about her neck | Drawn tighter still & drags her helpless back | Forced o'er the edge at last it holds her there | To swing & twist, & dangle in the air | As her full weight bears on the slipping knot | Begins a strangling pressure round her throat | Without, - the halter gulls her tender skin | Her windpipe chokes, & checks her breath within | She tries to scream for mercy, but in vain | No sound shall issue from those lips again | But silent movements only testify | How long the struggling body takes to die | Striving in vain the pinioned arms to loose | Could she but reach the ever tightening noose | Relax a little of it's [sic] choking strain | Pull off the stifling cap & breathe again.' Further on is another suggestive couplet: 'So ask not we if she or cares or notes | What passes 'neath those dangling petticoats.' The last four lines read: 'With heavy thud she fills her narrow bed | And on its flannell pillow rests her head | To quit it once but only to assume | Washed & laid out the garments of the tomb'. Beneath the last line is the catch-word 'There'.
