Racing in York can be traced back to Roman times and it is now the third biggest racecourse in Britain in terms of prize-money offered. The excellent turf of its Knavesmire location allows the course to have good going even under very wet conditions. The entire distance around the left-handed course was two miles with a 550 yard run-in but this was extended in 2005 to host the 2 mile, 4 furlong Gold Cup for the Royal Meeting. Condition: New. Flat, steeple-chases and hurdle-races all took place at Haydock Park. Situated within easy distance of Liverpool and Manchester, it was also on the Grand Central, London and North Western and Great Northern railways. The running line is left-handed with the going very much on the rise at the finish. Both curves are gallopable at full speed and the entire distance round being 1 mile, four furlongs and 190 yards. The going is good, even in foul weather due to the clay pipe drainage and new red sand and marl soil. Haydock Park remains one of Britain's most used race courses with racing held on 32 days of the year.

The first racing meeting took place at Cork Park in 1869. It was of little attraction to the English stables but was handsomely supported by Irish bloodstock with higher monetary inducements than any of the minor English racing meetings ta the time. With a flat course and a steeple chase course, The Shandon Plate alone had a purse of £850 in 1902. The course was 1 mile 3 furlongs round with no gradients of note. The heavy boulder clay made going very heavy in wet weather. The last meeting took place in April 1917 and the site would become the Ford Industrial Estate.

Standing 200 feet above sea level, this left-handed course gave Bayles little to complain about. The going is generally good and it extended in circumference to 1 mile and 103 yards. It remains one of the true homes of the northern racing scene. Steeped in history with the first recorded meeting taking place in 1783, racing is held at Catterick all years round and it is one of the busiest racecourses in Yorkshire. Condition: New. Thirsk and the surrounding area has a rich heritage of horse racing. The course at Thirsk itself has been in the Bell family since 1723 and it became a formal racecourse in 1875. The circumference is left-handed and in 1903 was 1 mile, 2 furlongs and 100 yards. Notable races held include the Hambleton Cup which has been run for over 160 years and the St. Leger which was run there in 1940. Condition: New. Sent rolled. Doncaster is one of the oldest established locations for horse-racing in Britain. With records of race meetings being held in the 16th century, it is barely 40 feet above sea level. The entire length around the course was 1 mile 7 furlongs in 1903 and the run-in very short. With The Doncaster Gold Cup alongside the St. Leger, this course is home to two of the world's oldest horse races. Condition: New. Sent rolled. Racing has been held at Curragh Camp since 1741. The programme is varied and valuable stakes are competed for including The Irish Derby. An important feature is the Madrid mile line, which is, but for a very slight curve about two furlongs from the start, a straight mile. The Peel Course offers a rattling good gallop. Overall, from a racing point of view, stamina and fitness are indispensable at the Curragh as it is one of the most demanding racecourses. The excellence of the turf does however go some way to compensate for the severity of the gallops.

Situated on the Charlton Downs, Goodwood held one of the most delightful situations for a race meeting. The construction of the course was unusual with its outline taking a left and right-handed direction. Racing began at Goodwood in 1802, with the first Goodwood stakes being in 1823. The chalk subsoil provides unsurpassed at any other course in the British Isles for racing in all weathers. The running ground in extent was just over two miles and racing held over various distances with the gallop considered everything that one could desire.

Horse racing has taken place in Ripon since 1664 at a number of different venues. Ripon was also the location of the first horse race exclusively for lady riders. The racecourse has been at its current location on Boroughbridge road since 1900 and this map was first produced in 1903. The course stands 100 feet above sea level with a right-handed running line. It is one mile and three quarters in circumference with two turns in its outline. A road intercepts the course at the turn and another crosses the going between the one and a half and the one and a quarter miles. All the races start on a straight line from the 'gate' except the one and a half miles which is just on the top turn. There is a rattling good gallop on the far side for half a mile. Condition: New. Beverley racecourse was founded in the mid-18th century and the first grandstand was built in 1767 at a cost of £1000. Recent plans to build a new grandstand have been put on hold due to the recent pandemic. In 1903 the egg-shaped track on the Westwood Pasture at Beverley was right-handed and measured 1 mile and 772 yards round with a 750 yard uphill run-in. Condition: New. Sent rolled. The course at Pontefract Park was about two miles round in 1903 and was referred to as a 'fourth-rate' meeting by Bayles due to its gradients occurring at too short intervals and the poor quality of its ground. Thankfully this is no longer the case and the course has undergone major redevelopment over the years. This left-handed undulating oval has the distinction of being the longest continuous circuit in the country. Condition: New. Sent rolled. Horse racing as a pastime can be traced back to the 1640s on Epsom Downs during the English Civil War with the Derby first being run in 1780 and The Oaks in 1779. The downs are upon chalk and are situated 500 feet above sea level. This altitude prevented the ground from ever becoming dangerously hard. The Derby was run over 1 mile, 4 furlongs and 29 yards and the course undulatory with a hollow on Tattenham Corner and the 'straight mile' was by no means straight. Bayles was critical of the course but it remains one of the most historic and The Derby one of the premier events on the racing calendar.

It is suggested that Queen Anne first suggested that a horse racing course be constructed on the desmesne of Royal Ascot Heath in 1711. The number of race days continued to expand and in 1828 King George IV established the Royal Procession. Royal interest has remained a major influence in Ascot racecourse and diligent improvements ensured that by 1902 it was in splendid condition and would be one of the best gallops in existence. With notable races throughout the year including flat, steeple-chases and hurdling, it is a premier racing destination with Royal Ascot remaining Britain's most valuable race meeting.

The diversion of racing was in full swing at Newmarket Heath in 1604 with the Palace being erected as a sort of racing box for The Stuart Kings. Considered by some to be a model racing ground, it would become known as the 'Headquarters of The Turf'. Disputed by others, it goes without saying that where bloodstock is concerned, the chief centre was Newmarket. Its undersoil of Middle Chalk along with devoted supervision and care have resulted in its excellent conditions for racing. Bayles noted four courses, The Beacon, The July, The Old Cambridgeshire and The Cesarewitch. Standing on the largest expanse of cultivated heathland in the world and also home to The Jockey Club, Newmarket is a place like no other and is even now known simply as 'Headquarters'.

It is considered safe to assume that this district is the birthplace of steeplechasing with records dating back to the time of the Norman Conquest. The Liverpool races commenced at Maghull in 1827 from which the present venue at Aintree originated. The Grand Stand was complete in 1830 and in 1839 'Lottery' would become the first winner of the 'Grand Liverpool Steeplechase', a race that would become known as 'The Grand National'. The distance was 4 miles 856 yards which necessitated two complete circuits of the course with the exception of the water jump and the formidable fence preceding it. 'Becher's Brook' and 'Valentine's Brook' were also highly difficult and demanding. Horse racing throughout the world is steeped in the history of this Grand National race and it remains of the highest importance in the horse-racing calendar.
