1st Edition. Hardbound small 4to (10.25 inches tall) 250 pages. Notes, indexes. Description: Many black and white photo illustrations. Frederick Pease Harlow was a sailor before the mast in the 1870s when spars and rigging still made a web across the waterfront skylines of American ports. Starting out like most coastal boys with small boat sailing, he began his deep water training on a royal yard which the Harlow youths rigged up in their attic. This rigged experience enabled him to go aloft on his first voyage in a square rigger, and, to the mate's astonishment, take in the royal in a rough sea and high wind, slick as a whistle. Harlow's inherent love for the sea combined with a rough and athletic physique insured his success as a sailor. In 1925 the Marine Research Society published Harlow's own account of his apprenticeship and the voyage on Akbar to Australia and Java, under the title, The Making of a Sailor or Sea Life Aboard a Yankee Square-Rigger. In it he describes men working at the capstan, hauling halliards or sheets, and on other jobs where chanties were used, and he gives a few examples of the songs and sing outs. In this present work the part played by chanties aboard ship is elaborated. Harlow was not a chantey man but he was shipmate with some good ones and joined in the robust choruses with a will. Harlow died in 1952; a portion of this book appeared in a periodical in 1948, but he did not live to see this book in print. BINDING/CONDITION: blue cloth with black spine text; a Very Good book, with a Good dust jacket; the jacket is price clipped. ISBN: B000GONCUU.

Two original photographs relating to the semi-clipper ship 'Glory of the Seas'. The first is a 10 x 8 albumen photograph of the ship at her final resting place of Eudolyne, WA, taken just prior to her being burned for scrap metal. It shows an obviously derelict vessel beached on the rocks perilously close to shore, with tress and crashing waves in the foreground. Harlow has written a number of stats on the back: "The figurehead of a beautiful woman has been removed. Is now in India House Club for Men, New York City": "Christened by Donald McKay's daughter Frances August Clavel", etc. The photograph was apparently taken by Jack Graham. The 'Glory of the Seas' was the last ship built for master shipbuilder Donald McKay of East Boston, often called 'the most famous clipper ship builder of his time'. In 1875 she carried a load of grain from San Francisco to Sydney is 35 days, a record at the time. She was burned for her metal on May 13, 1923.The next photograph (also 10 x 8) is of the model constructed by Frederick Pease Harlow, a sailor in his youth and author of the classic 'The Making of a Sailor'. The photograph shows the full model of medium clipper ship 'Glory of the Seas' by Frederick Pease Harlow, who had, as a child, played in her hull before launching in E. Boston in 1869. The masts, yards, and decking are made from wood from the salvaged stateroom door, and the anchors are made from copper spikes from the original vessel. Hull painted black topsides, gold-green bottom, blue hatch coamings and waterways. Details include American ensign, white figurehead of Athena, 4 boats, including one on davits with oars, anchors, winch. Scale 1/8"=1'. The actual model is now hosed in the Mystic Seaport Museum. Harlow's typed ship biography and model stats affixed to rear of photo. As a resident of Seattle at the time of the salvaging Harlow was in a good position to acquire relics from the Glory before it burned. Also included is a good copy of the 1925 pamphlet "Donald McKay and the Ships He Built" and a copy of the prospectus for Harlow's own book "The Making of a Sailor".
