This book by the author brings to light the severity and impact of a fungus called Fomes annosus, responsible for causing extensive damage to coniferous forests and plantations throughout the world. Despite its prevalence, this disease has historically remained under the radar in the Northeastern United States. The book delves into the various ways Fomes annosus manifests, including root rot and butt rot, affecting a wide range of coniferous species. The author emphasizes the ability of this fungus to survive as a saprophyte for extended periods, highlighting the challenges it poses in forest management practices. The accessible language and detailed descriptions provided in this book empower readers to identify and recognize the fungus in the field, enabling proactive measures to mitigate its impact. Through well-documented observations and illustrations, the author draws attention to the diverse forms and characteristics of Fomes annosus, including bracket-like conks, resupinate forms, and abnormal fruiting bodies commonly found on infected trees. This book offers an invaluable resource for foresters, plant pathologists, and anyone concerned with the health and preservation of coniferous forests.
