Cuando estalló la guerra civil huyó del bando republicano a la zona nacional para evitar entrar en combate. Una vez acabada la contienda se ofreció como espía al Gobierno británico a fin de colaborar en la lucha contra el fascismo. Ante la falta de interés de aquél, decidió emprender en solitario su carrera como espía al servicio de los alemanes, lo que le proporcionó pruebas suficientes para finalmente ganarse la confianza de los ingleses y convertirse en agente doble de su servicio secreto. Ya transformado en GARBO, creó una trama ficticia para engañar a sus superiores nazis y les hizo creer que el desembarco de Normandía no era más que una de las muchas incursiones rutinarias. Su trabajo permitió llevar a buen puerto la ofensiva aliada y precipitar la caída de Alemania, con el consiguiente fin de la guerra en Europa.Este libro contiene el informe que Tomás Harris, su oficial superior en el MI5, redactó a partir de amplias conversaciones con GARBO. El resultado es un relato novelado que el historiador Mark Seaman prologa y completa con numerosas notas para resaltar la magnitud histórica de este documento, hasta hace poco inaccesible por estar clasificado.
