Harvey); Suicidality in Pediatric Bipolar Disorder (Tina R. Goldstein); The Assessment of Children and Adolescents with Bipolar Disorder (Eric A. Youngstrom, Andrew J. Freeman, Melissa McKeown Jenkins); Preschool Bipolar Disorder (Joan L. Luby, Mini Tandon, Andy Belden); Affect Regulation in Pediatric Bipolar Disorder (Daniel P. Dickstein, Alison C. Brazel, Lisa D. Goldberg, Jeffrey I. Hunt); Magnetic Resonance Imaging Studies in Early Onset Bipolar Disorder: An Updated Review (Janine Terry, Melissa Lopez-Larson, Jean A. Frazier); Family and Genetic Association Studies of Bipolar Disorder in Children (Eric Mick, Stephen V. Faraone); Pharmacologic Treatment of Pediatric Bipolar Disorder (Jayasree J. Nandagopal, Melissa P. DelBello, Robert Kowatch); Psychosocial Treatments for Childhood and Adolescent Bipolar Disorder (Amy E. West, Mani N. Pavuluri); Alternative Treatments in Pediatric Bipolar Disorder (Mona Potter, Alana Moses, Janet Wozniak); Raising a Bipolar Child: A Family Perspective (Susan Resko) -- This issue provides an update of our current understanding of bipolar disorder (BPD) in children and adolescents. It includes a fascinating historical perspective; an in-depth discussion of the phenomenology, outcomes, and assessment of BPD; the latest findings in neurobiology and genetics; the various treatment options available; and an important perspective from families living with children and adolescents who have BPD. The amount of research in child and adolescent BPD has been increasing at an impressive pace. We are fortunate that many of the leaders in the field are able to contribute their expertise to this edition. Although it is no longer debated that BPD can occur in children and adolescents, many questions remain about the boundaries of the disorder, the neurobiologic underpinnings, and the optimal treatments, to name a few. We hope that this issue provides clinicians with an easily accessible and integrated source of the latest information available that may improve patient outcomes and prompt new research hypotheses. [.] According to Dr. Wozniak and colleagues, part of the controversy surrounding the diagnosis of BPD in youth is the concern that children given the diagnosis may be subjected to treatments fraught with potentially impairing and serious side effects. Increasingly, clinicians, researchers, and patients and their families are turning to an array of natural products considered complementary and alternative treatments. These investigators review some of the alternative agents that have the potential to be the most useful in the treatment of pediatric BPD. This issue finishes with the perspective of Susan Resko, the Executive Director of the Child and Adolescent Bipolar Foundation, who helps to connect parents of children who have BPD using the Internet. She describes the struggles that many families with children diagnosed with BPD go through and offers resources, connection, and hope to families and teens who are struggling, often in isolation, with mood disorders.…

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover, xviii + 219 pages, NOT ex-library. Book is clean and bright, with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Boards show gentle handling wear. Issued without a dust jacket. -- Contents: Treatment of Inattention, Overactivity, and Impulsiveness in Autism Spectrum Disorders; Pharmacotherapy of Irritability in Pervasive Developmental Disorders; Psychopharmacologic Interventions for Repetitive Behaviors in Autism Spectrum Disorder; Assessment and Pharmacologic Treatment of Sleep Disturbance in Autism; Developing Drugs for Core Social and Communication Impairment in Autism; Complementary and Alternative Medicine Treatments for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders; Applied Behavior Analysis Treatment of Autism: The State of the Art; Interventions to Improve Communication in Autism; Social Skills Training for Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorders; Behavioral Assessment and Treatment of Self-Injurious Behavior in Autism; Assessment and Behavioral Treatment of Feeding and Sleeping Disorders in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders; Bridging for Success in Autism: Training and Collaboration Across Medical, Educational, and Community Systems; Index -- This issue of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Clinics of North America is on the treatment of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), also known as pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs). Typically diagnosed in childhood, these disorders cause lifelong and characteristic impairment in socialization, communication, and behavior. A number of specific 'core' symptoms are found to varying degrees. These can include poor eye contact, deficits in other nonverbal behavior, social withdrawal, impairment in social interaction, echolalia, stereotypies, intense and circumscribed interests, and a preoccupation with parts of objects instead of the whole. These core impairments can range from mild to disabling. Autistic disorder (autism) is frequently associated with mental retardation, which contributes to impairment in functioning. Asperger's disorder and PDD not otherwise specified are less frequently associated with mental retardation. These three disorders represent the majority of patients seen clinically. This issue on ASDs is unique in that it is largely focused on treatment and less on the comprehensive characteristics and underlying neurobiology of autism; it delves into what we know about treating ASDs. It focuses on approaches to core symptoms and common behavioral problems and should serve as a resource for what treatments have been studied and what an appropriate treatment plan might include. The first six articles discuss various symptoms or aspects of autism that may be addressed with pharmacologic and medical approaches. The last six articles discuss behavioral and psychosocial interventions aimed at improving core deficits or problematic behaviors. [.] This issue provides up-to-date reviews by experts in the area of ASDs treatment. It presents both psychopharmacologic and nonpharmacologic approaches. It dissects the myriad of problems individuals with ASD may present with into specific symptom areas that can be addressed through various treatment modalities. These symptom areas can then be addressed with an approach that is tailored to the specific situation of the individual. It also will serve as a resource for child and adolescent psychiatrists and mental health professionals who treat these challenging disorders. …

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The field of hospital psychiatry has faced unimaginable challenges and opportunities during the last decade. Even as we continue to fight COVID-19, the century's greatest public health crisis, the need for behavioral health treatments continues to increase.Providers and policymakers agree that integrating behavioral treatments into regular courses of patient care helps address postdischarge needs, including safe housing, reliable transportation, and nutrition. Behavioral wellness is currently benefitting from increased public attention, but disparities in access continue to plague people of color and members of the LGTBQIA+ community, who often struggle to find culturally competent treatment. There is a significant need for dedicated psychiatric hospitals and dedicated units in general hospitals to meet America's mental health needs.Progress is happening, but many familiar challenges remain. Inadequate healthcare coverage and reimbursement for services has left both patients and medical providers desperate for reform. Staffing shortages are worsening as practitioners in the baby boomer generation retire and those roles go unfilled by new graduates.Despite these challenges, psychiatric hospitals continue to adapt and find ways to care for patients. This updated textbook contains valuable knowledge and new insights for clinicians regarding treatment, staffing, and care, and features new chapters on family involvement and safety, federal and local financing, and information on collaborative care and LEAN. Forward-looking chapters focus on the integration of treatment across settings and providers and examine new strategies such as telemedicine to extend the reach of clinicians. Together, and with expert guidance, readers of this must-have resource will find a roadmap for clinical, administrative, and financial steps to help providers take advantage of these unprecedented times to develop services and advance hospital psychiatry in the United States.
