Benjamin Hartley (1837-1912), a Scottish born artist, was educated at the Theological Seminary in Gambier, Ohio, and traveled to West Africa in 1864 as a missionary. There, he met and married Emily Griswold (1838-1906). Hartley sketched, painted and photographed the landscape and peoples of Africa until 1867, when the couple returned to the United States. Hartley's scrapbooks and sketchbooks are located at AAS. The present small grouping descends from a family member. A) Four pen-and-ink drawings, on J. Whatman wove paper, 3 signed: "Ku ah Kai" (spirit house); Calling the Spirits; Hn? the Deyâ; Samples of Gree grees . Liberia: 1860s. Each approx. 4-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches. B) Six photographs, one signed on the mount in pencil. 1) Deya's House at Bevede, W.A. 3-1/4 x 4 inches. 2) Gribo House, W.A. (from the same negative as preceding by trimmed). 4-1/2 x 2-1/4 inches. 3) King Wia's Grave. 4x3-1/2 inches. 4) [Photograph of a drawing of a church, with trees and a large house]. 2x3-1/2 inches. 5) Gribo Woman, Cape Palmas, WA [photograph of a drawing]. 2x1-1/2 inches. 6) Hammock Bearers [photograph of a drawing, mounted on the same sheet as #5]. 1-3/4x2-1/2 inches. C) Small etching, titled in pencil on the mount Gribos at Cape Palmas (related to photograph #5 above). 4x3 inches. D) Three etchings with manuscript captions, titled: Half Grayway, looking towards Cape Palmas; Falls on the Cavalla River; Sunset at Tufla, Cavalla River. These images printed on card were evidently used by Hartley for a self-published book with manuscript title On Afric's Golden Sands which he gave as a Christmas gift in 1891. Approx. 6x9 inches.
