Each play is dealt with in a separate essay, where the author reveals Synge's continuous preference for the imaginative element in life, and fills in the background of local meanings, people and places. Each text has its own commentary and notes a longer, comprehensive essay, with examples showing Synge's technique in handling originals, includes his poems and translations. ***The editor is the Wilson Lecturer in Poetry and Drama at Cambridge, and is the Director of the Yeats International Summer School. He is an Anglo-Irishman familiar with Synge's country and people.' (Quote from inside front of dustwrapper blurb). ***First hardback reprint of the true first edition, complete in its original dustwrapper in extremely nice, clean bright condition. **Of interest to academics studying Irish Literature, J.
