Though the United States was late to enter the Great War, a number of idealistic young Americans wished to take part from the beginning. One of these was Avery Royce Wolf, a highly educated scion of a family in America's burgeoning industrial heartland. Volunteering as an ambulance driver with the French Army in the Verdun sector, Royce sent back a constant stream of highly detailed letters describing the experience of frontline combat, as well as comments on strategy, the country he encountered, and the Allies' prospects for success. This treasure trove of brilliant letters, only recently discovered, is accompanied by several albums worth of rare, high-quality photos depicting aspects of the Great War in France never previously published. Full of action, including the suspense and terror of the Ludendorff Offensive, and interesting firsthand analyses, such as comparing French and German trench works, Letters from Verdun brings the reader amazingly close to the frontlines of the Great War. …

Decision Games Strategy & Tactics #251 - #300 #277 w/Ticonderoga - The Battles for Lake George, 1755-58 (EX) (unpunched) Manufacturer: Decision Games Product Line: Strategy & Tactics #251 - #300 Type: Magazine Code: DCGST277 Copyright Date: 2012 Author: William Nester, Eric Harvey Page Count: 62 Please review the condition and any condition notes for the exact condition of this item. Please feel free to contact us with any questions. Product Description: Ticonderoga simulates six engagements in the region between the upper Hudson and lower Lake Champlain, specifically the area between northern Lake George and Fort Carillon (a.k.a. Ticonderoga) during the French and Indian War (1755-58). The game system emphasizes the importance of leaders, and highlights the role of individual command skills, circumstances and luck. Throughout the game, leadersâ skills are tested as their units maneuver and fight, and every leader has the capacity to be âinept,â âcapableâ or âexceptional,â varying from engagement to engagement. The game includes a lot of randomization; so every game may vary in tempo. One game may involve more soldiers than another, and often the quality of the lower-level (unnamed) leaders will be different. There are three campaign and three raid scenarios, featuring many units for the longer games and fewer for shorter ones (280 counters total). Each hex on the Strategic Map represents 1.5 miles, whereas each hex on the Tactical Map (for the area near Ticonderoga) represents just 400 yards. Individual units represent from 50 to 800 men, and leader chits each represent a single commander, sometimes a famous historical figure, at other times an unknown man of low-rank. Articles: Mongol Military Disasters. An analysis of the Mongol invasions that failed, leading to the stagnation and eventual end of their empire. German WWI Anti-Tank Doctrine. The Germans fielded few tanks in the Great War; instead, they were the first to concentrate on how to destroy them. Capture of the USS Peublo. Analysis of how this US Navy intelligence-gathering ship came to be captured by the North Koreans in 1968. …

The reader can sympathize with Royce's dilemma when his original term of service expires and he wonders whether to return home. But then the American army begins to arrive and he decides to continue on. We hear firsthand how the U.S. troops are first kept out of battle, then take casualties no veteran unit would have sustained, because of their fresh-faced audacity. When the Ludendorff Offensive unfolds in spring 1918 there is nothing but disaster to report, as each day witnesses a new collapse before the seeming unstoppable Germans. Royce believes that the entire Allied war effort is doomed. But then somehow the Allies hold on and the war is nearly at an end.
