Robert Hawk traces it from its beginning more than 400 years ago in St. Augustine, a small outpost on the fringe of the Spanish Empire. For more than 250 years, under the Spanish, the British, and the Spanish again, the Florida militia defended their homeland against Indians, pirates, the French, the English, and even the Americans during the Revolution. Hawk then traces the militia through another 170 years which included the Civil War and Spanish-American War and then the World War and conflicts of this century. First Hawk explores the earliest history of the militia tradition, which, when most broadly defined, goes back to our earliest cave-dwelling ancestors. He traces the idea of the citizen-soldier through Western civilization, specifically the English tradition which is the basis of American militia.
