Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good-. 459 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H). "Since the discovery by Aserinsky and Kleitman of an objective indicator of dreaming sleep, there have been a plethora of studies investigating the physiological parameters of the dreaming and non-dreaming sleep states. However, there has been an unfortunate neglect of the psychological concomitants of these states in most of this work. A comprehensive symposium which would bring together workers interested in the psychology of dreaming with those who worked with the REM technique for the collection of sleep mentation seemed desirable if the understanding of the psychology of dreaming was to keep pace and be integrated with the ever-increasing physiological knowledge. This volume reports on a conference which focused both on the classical views of the nature of the dream as seen in the light of the findings coming from the REM studies and on the current attempts at exploring the content of REM collected dreams. The interaction between the participants, those who articulated theoretical statements about the psychology of the dream, and those who examined dream content in various experimental ways, lead to further reintegrative efforts on both sides." Minor waviness to edges of textblock, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edgewear, light edge wrinkling, several tiny closed tears, browning on spine and lighter at edges.

Ultimately, its value is highly dependent on the successful integration of photonic integrated circuits with microfluidic or nanofluidic systems. Handbook of Optofluidics provides a snapshot of the state of the field, captures current trends, and gives insight into the technology of tomorrow, which will enable researchers to tackle challenges and opportunities that it can uniquely answer. Divided into three sections, this comprehensive resource begins by introducing the scientific foundations that contribute to optofluidics. It details the connections to related research areas and reveals the scientific influences currently shaping the design and function of optofluidic systems. It provides brief reviews of those established fields from which optofluidics has evolved, putting special emphasis on how they currently intersect. This introductory material provides a basis for understanding the chapters that follow. The second section explores the synthesis of fundamental concepts to create novel devices, specifically those with optical properties that are manipulated by fluids. A main theme that runs through this part is the dynamic reconfigurability made possible by flowing and reshaping fluids. The final section looks to future applications of the field, presenting recent developments in particle detection and manipulation primarily being developed for biosensing and biomedical applications. Enhanced by thematic connections throughout the chapters that help define the field, this volume is a concise reference for the growing optofluidics community and is poised to provide a stepping stone for continued research in an area that holds promise for a myriad of applications. -- Contents: Part I: Foundations of Optofluids; 1: Introduction to Microfluidic and Optofluidic Transport; 2: Microfabrication; 3: Passive Integrated Optics; 4: Photonic Crystal Hollow Waveguides; 5: Optoelectronics; 6: Spectroscopic Methods; 7: Lab-on-a-Chip; Part II: Optical Elements and Devices; 8: Fluid-Controlled Optical Elements; 9: Optofluidic Imaging Elements; 10: Optofluidic Switches and Sensors; 11: Optofluidic Ring Resonators; 12: Optofluidic Light Sources; Part III: Bioanalysis; 13: Single-Molecule Detection; 14: Optical Trapping and Manipulation; 15: Fluid-Filled Optical Fibers; 16:Integrated Optofluidic Waveguides; 17: Raman Detection in Microchips and Microchannels; 18: Plasmonics; 19: Flow Cytometry and Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorting; Appendix A: Optical Properties of Water; Appendix B: Refractive Index of Liquids and Solids; Appendix C: Viscosity and Surface Tension of Typical Liquids; Appendix D: Common Fluorescent Dyes; Appendix E: Common Physical Constants; Appendix F: Common Biological Buffers.
