First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 1895, 12mo, 124pp, index, portrait. Covers discolored and stained, name in ink on front cover, contents G. This is a shortened version, having the same imprint, but fifteen fewer poems than another first edition I've seen in a different binding. The author, a song writer of great renown, was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1837. He worked for the newspapers for many years as marine editor, and was a river boat captain for awhile. There seems to be no truth to the persistent legend that Hays wrote the song Dixie for the Buckner Guards, who were on their way South in 1857. It seems almost certain that Dan Emmett, of the Bryant Minstrels, was the composer.
