A son médecin : « Mon cher ami, Aujourd'hui, c'est pour moi-même que je vous dérangerai boen. On a constaté un petit point de congestion au sommet de mon poumon après quelques petits accidents hémorragiques. Comme je c…rains (j'espère à tort) que cela se rattache à ma très ancienne maladie de poitrine, je tiens essentiellement d'avoir l'opinion d'un homme de votre valeur, m'ayant connu et examiné dans ce temps. c'est le Dr Delaporte qui me traite. Je l'ai prévenu de la démarche que je fais auprès de vous, il en est très content. Pourriez-vous, cher ami, vous trouver chez moi aujourd'hui entre 5 et 7h, vous me rendrez très heureux. Répondez un mot pour me laisser le temps de prévenir Delaporte. Si vous préférez venir seul et avant 5h, ça me convient également pourvu que je vous vois [mot illisible] aujourd'hui. Mille amitiés. An den Kunsthändler Rudolf Lepke (1844[?]-1904): "So eben von einer Reise nach Hamburg zurück gekehrt erfahre ich von Georges Petit daß Sie hier gewesen sind, ich bedaure sehr Sie verfehlt zu haben, da ich mit Ihnen etwas zu bereden hatte. - Petit sagte mir daß Sie ein Bild von mir in Berlin zu sehen… wünschen, ein Bild, das Sie hier ausgesucht haben, u. von dem beiläufig gesagt unser Freund Georges Ihnen nicht den richtigen Preis gesagt, wie er Ihnen auch wo[h]l schreiben wird, was ich Ihnen zu sagen habe. [Und zwar] folgendes. Fr. E. Behrens in Hamburg hat jetzt wiederholt den Wunsch ausgesprochen ein Bild von mir zu besitzen [.]". - Heilbuth studierte in München und Antwerpen und war in Paris bei Delaroche und Gleyre tätig. Nach einem einjährigen Aufenthalt in Rom ging er nach Paris, hielt sich während des Deutsch-Französischen Kriegs in London auf und ließ sich anschließend wieder in Paris nieder. 1878 naturalisiert, wurde er 1881 Offizier der Ehrenlegion. Heilbuth malte u. a. "Empfang bei Rubens" (1853) und "Luca Signorelli an der Leiche seines erschlagenen Sohnes" (1859) und erhielt 1861 das Kreuz der Ehrenlegion für Arbeiten wie "Tod des Signorelli". "In seinem Spätwerk stellte er vor allem die elegante Pariserin dar. Die Entwicklung der impressionistischen Bewegung verfolgte Heilbuth mit großem Interesse" (DBE). - Auf Briefpapier mit gepr.
