This remarkable Autograph Letter Signed (ALS) was written by German-born French painter Ferdinand Heilbuth (1826-1889) to Alexandre Dumas fils (1824-1895), one of the most celebrated French authors of the 19th century. Bearing an interlaced "FH" monogram, this letter is a stunning historical testament to the bitter cultural fallout following the Franco-Prussian War. Heilbuth is responding to a xenophobic letter from Dumas, who had apparently accused the painter of espionage due to his German heritage, yet hypocritically advised him to naturalize as a French citizen. Heilbuth systematically eviscerates Dumas's "delirious" patriotism, refusing naturalization as it would make him a "Renegade." He also angrily reclaims a sketch he had gifted to Dumas, asking him to return it to their mutual friend, art critic Charles Yriarte. This emotionally charged manuscript vividly captures the shattered friendships of the era. No postal routing marks; likely hand-delivered. I conclude that patriotism, like wit, has its degrees and its failings. I also pass over in silence the theories of international hatred that you proclaim, and I leave the entire responsibility for them to you; you will also allow me not to thank you for having kindly absolved me of the suspicion of infamy and espionage. tell me how is it that a man like you, who pushes patriotic sentiments to the point of delirium. can give me the advice to have myself naturalized as French. I would have fatally and voluntarily added the title of 'Renegade'. So exercise patriotism in your own way, sacrifice to it at your ease all the friendships and all the sympathies that you please. As for the poor little drawing which seems to weigh on you so much, I beg you to kindly send it back to Yriarte. If someone had told me some time ago that one day I would read 12 pages of Dumas fils without being delighted and fascinated they would have surprised me very much, but we live in such extraordinary times. An den Kunsthändler Rudolf Lepke (1844[?]-1904): "So eben von einer Reise nach Hamburg zurück gekehrt erfahre ich von Georges Petit daß Sie hier gewesen sind, ich bedaure sehr Sie verfehlt zu haben, da ich mit Ihnen etwas zu bereden hatte. - Petit sagte mir daß Sie ein Bild von mir in Berlin zu sehen wünschen, ein Bild, das Sie hier ausgesucht haben, u. von dem beiläufig gesagt unser Freund Georges Ihnen nicht den richtigen Preis gesagt, wie er Ihnen auch wo[h]l schreiben wird, was ich Ihnen zu sagen habe. [Und zwar] folgendes. Fr. E. Behrens in Hamburg hat jetzt wiederholt den Wunsch ausgesprochen ein Bild von mir zu besitzen [.]". - Heilbuth studierte in München und Antwerpen und war in Paris bei Delaroche und Gleyre tätig. Nach einem einjährigen Aufenthalt in Rom ging er nach Paris, hielt sich während des Deutsch-Französischen Kriegs in London auf und ließ sich anschließend wieder in Paris nieder. 1878 naturalisiert, wurde er 1881 Offizier der Ehrenlegion. Heilbuth malte u. a. "Empfang bei Rubens" (1853) und "Luca Signorelli an der Leiche seines erschlagenen Sohnes" (1859) und erhielt 1861 das Kreuz der Ehrenlegion für Arbeiten wie "Tod des Signorelli". "In seinem Spätwerk stellte er vor allem die elegante Pariserin dar. Die Entwicklung der impressionistischen Bewegung verfolgte Heilbuth mit großem Interesse" (DBE). - Auf Briefpapier mit gepr.
