Rarissime…édition au tirage confidentiel. Cette édition fut publiée à l'occasion d'une représentation donnée le 28 octobre 1781 au château de La Brosse, propriété d'Anne Léon II (Paris, 1731-Munster, 1799), duc de Montmorency. Les transcriptions des opéras étaient à la mode au XVIIIe siècle et très prisées pour les concerts privés. Charlotte Françoise, née Montmorency-Luxembourg (Paris, 1752-Paris, 1829), duchesse de Montmorency, y joua le rôle de Léonore, veuve aisée, au coeur d'un imbroglio amoureux entrainant quiproquos comiques, duels et confrontations, qui connait un dénouement heureux. Les comtes de Laval, de la Tourette, le marquis du Roure, la marquise de Maupéou et une Melle Marnut, attachée à la duchesse de Montmorency, lui donnèrent la réplique. Cette édition est inconnue des bibliographies usuelles, de Soleinne, Cioranescu, Gay-Lemonnier, et aucun exemplaire n'est référencé dans les bibliothèques françaises et étrangères. Un grand succès. "Les Fausses apparences" est la deuxième collaboration de Thomas d'Hèle, librettiste et André Grétry, compositeur. Elle fit écrire au critique littéraire et musical Friedrich Melchior Grimm qu'aucun poète n'a fourni à Grétry "des sujets et des situations plus analogues au caractère de sa musique" (cité par Jean Duron). Dès sa création, le 20 novembre 1778, devant la cour royale de Versailles, cet opéra-comique remporta un grand succès. Représenté à Paris le 23 décembre 1778, il fut joué sans interruption jusqu'en 1779 puis repris en France et à l'étranger. "Nous sommes tenté de nous associer à la Harpe pour placer cet ouvrage au premier rang de ceux que produisit au XVIIIe siècle l'école française de l'opéra-comique" (Michel Brenet). Certains musicologues ont même pensé que Mozart s'en était inspiré pour le finale des Noces de Figaro (1786) et que l'on pourrait être "presque tenté de reprocher un emprunt au plus opulent et au plus prodigue des maîtres" (M. V. Wilder cité par Michel Brenet). Avant de travailler pour le théâtre, Thomas Hales (Gloucesthire, vers 1740-Paris, 1780) embrassa d'abord la carrière des armes. Après des années de service en Jamaïque, il voyagea en Italie et en Suisse, avant de rejoindre la France où il devint dramaturge en langue française sous le nom de plume de Thomas d'Hèle. C'est en 1775 qu'il fit la connaissance du compositeur André Grétry. Après Rome, où André Grétry (Liège, 1741-Montmorency, 1813) orienta sa carrière de musicien vers l'opéra buffa, sa rencontre avec Voltaire à Ferney lui ouvrit les recommandations nécessaires pour son installation à Paris. Combinant son style musical italianisant avec le goût français, il rencontra très vite le succès notamment avec Le Huron (1768) d'après Voltaire. Diderot, Grimm, l'abbé Arnaud, Jean-Jacques Rousseau et son ami le peintre Jean-Baptiste Greuze comptèrent parmi ses admirateurs. Avec Richard Coeur de Lion (1784) ou Zémire et Azor (1771), Les Fausses apparences ou l'amant jaloux demeure l'un de ses plus grands succès, joué jusqu'en Russie et aux Amériques. Sous le Consulat et l'Empire, le public apprécia toujours ses oeuvres. Il meurt en 1813, dans sa propriété l'Ermitage à Montmorency, achetée en 1797, où Jean-Jacques Rousseau avait habité en 1756-1757 et commencé La Nouvelle Héloïse.
