Synopsis: New works by contemporary German artist Anselm Kiefer inspired by, and exhibited with, sculptures and drawings by Auguste Rodin, highlighting the modernity and originality of their common artistic visionPublished in conjunction with an exhibition at the Musée Rodin in Paris (March 2017 October 2017), and the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia (November 2017- March 2018)In honor of the centenary of Rodin's death, there are numerous events celebrating his work, including a major exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris (March 2017 July 2017), a show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (September 2017 January 2018), the introduction of a 2-euro coin depicting Rodin's The Thinker, and a newly created postage stamp depicting The Kiss On the occasion of the centenary of Rodin's death, Anselm Kiefer was given carte blanche to create works inspired by Rodin. The result of this contemplative dialogue, produced over four years, includes large-scale canvases, large-scale illustrated books worked in plaster, and vitrines filled with a mixture of personal objects, materials, debris, moulds and offcuts from Rodin's working process. These are displayed alongside drawings, sculptures, and plaster casts by Rodin, including works which have not been displayed in public previously. Published under the direction of Musée Rodin head archivist Véronique Mattiussi, with contributions by Musée Rodin director Catherine Chevillot, curators Sophie Biass-Fabiani and Hélène Marraud, and Deputy Director for Collections and Exhibitions at The Barnes Foundation, Sylvie Patry.
