A Good copy. 3 oz. weight. Jacques Helft [1891-1980] was a French art and antiques dealer. He opened a gallery with his brother in a private mansion at 4 rue de Ponthieu (Paris 8e). Helft became an expert in silverware and goldware auctions, and he wrote very precise catalogs reproducing the hallmarks, a rare thing at the time. He played a major role in the organization of one of the first major exhibitions devoted to silverware, which took place in 1936 at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris. He later wrote several books and prefaces on this theme. In 1940 he escaped to New York from France and in 1948 he relocated to Argentina for several years. He returned to France in 1956 and became Honorary President of the Syndicat des Antiquaires. Inscribed by Author(s).

Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Exquisite survey of the most exquisite period and style in all the visual and decorative arts. The book was published in conjunction with a monumental exhibition mounted, at least nominally, by the French government itself, with the then President, Valery Giscard d'Estaing serving as the chief sponsor, along with several officials in his Cabinet. And Pierre Gaxotte, one of the Immortals of the Academie Francaise, acted as editor. 4to. 29.5 by 21 cm. lxvi, [4], 682, [6] pp. With many contributors, all giants in their fields, writing chapters on architecture, gardens, painting, sculpture, prints, book design, tapestry, numismatics, costume and fashion, music, dance, etc. etc. Richly illustrated with photos of objets under discussion, with a good amount of color photography. This is much more than a superficial and pretty overview; there is no better starting point for anyone who wants to learn about any of the particular areas covered. While this copy is the softbound version, it is really more accurately described as bound by a limp card, that with its textured look and gilt decoration, is far superior to a typical softbound book. Our copy comes with a bookmark created for the book, listing its contributors. A few of the early leaves have a gentle wave, not quite a crease, diagonally across the lower corner. Other than this trivial sign of the book's use, if it is that, our copy is like new. Light and limp card. (Softbound).
