Binding is strained with some give in the spine (text block is substantial). Text is bright and clean with attractive and amusing illustrations throughout. Top edge is gilt with rough cut edges elsewhere - with some age browning to the edge of those. Endpapers with offsetting. First English-language edition (originally published a year earlier under the title 'Joseph Hémard: Autobiographie par Lui-Meme'), this being the deluxe issue, limited to 50 numbered copies printed on Japanese vellum (from a total edition of 700 copies). 4to. [viii], 43pp. Unlettered… grey cloth with the publisher's vibrant red top edge stain. The title page printed in black and green with a small colour reproduction. With over forty reproductions, including sixteen in colour. The cloth lightly marked in one or two places. Very good indeed. No dust wrapper called for. This deluxe example originally included a reproduction of an original watercolour by Hémard, but that insert is now absent. Only the second book to be published by Jack Kahane (who at this time had not yet coined 'The Obelisk Press' as his imprint name). Pearson A-2.
