The book examines his writings on the revolutions of 1848, the Crimean War, the American Civil War, the Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian Wars, and his analyses of nineteenth-century military developments. It argues that Engels was far more than a political theorist, presenting him as a serious and perceptive observer of military affairs whose assessments were respected even by professional soldiers. Combining intellectual history with military history, the work sheds light on an often-overlooked aspect of Engels's career.
