Add to basketMoore, Henry (illustrator). The First UK Printing published by A. Zwemmer, London in 1934. Large 8vo., plain cardboard boards with integrated folding wrapper in blue and black, showing one of Moore's sculptures to the upper panel (unclipped, '6/- net' to front flap); illustrated throughout with 36 full-page plates in black and white; altogether in Very Good++ condition, seldom found thus; The BOOK with a little toning to the fragile endpapers and little easing of the front hinge ; The WRAPPER with some overall light shelf-wear, rubbing and darkening; a couple of dark scratches to the lower panel; creased along the spine and chipped to ends with some expert tissue paper reinforcement to the spine tips and corners, the front panel remaining remarkably vibrant. A fabulous example. The wrapper is protected in a removable Mylar cover. First UK edition of this landmark work and the first monograph on the artist Henry Moore. This copy has been signed by Henry Moore and dated 1942 to the half title. Lund Humphries & Co. were the printers and designers of this title, which features an attractive and eye-catching cover image, and 36 photographs in black and white showing examples of the artist's work. The pictures are accompanied by the appreciation by Herbert Read, and together the book represents the first documentation in print of an important relationship between the artist and art critic which would endure for several decades. It is widely believed that it was a visit to Moore's studio in 1929 which kickstarted Herbert Read's commitment to the world of modern art. Likely an introduction by Read's boss at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Eric Maclagan, the event was also pivotal to shaping the public reception to Moore's art. Their ongoing relationship, which lasted some 40 years, saw the development of their respective careers as critic and artist, and lasted all the way up until Read's death in 1968. 'Such was the centrality of Moore's work for the development of Read's philosophy of art that it is impossible to appreciate the connections within Read's diverse output without considering how Moore's sculpture came to signify the centre of Read's artistic universe and, at the same time, became the symbolic cornerstone of Read's aesthetic politics. Moore's work was consistently used by Read as [an] exemplar of an artistic modernism that reconciled the dualities of art. Whilst by no means the only contemporary artist Read used within the development of his aesthetic philosophy (Naum Gabo, Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth, Henri Matisse, Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso and Jean Arp, were also key), Moore remained more solidly in Read's favour than any other artist, contemporary or historic. What is perhaps most striking about Read's long-term engagement with Moore's work is that it always remained above his critical censure.' (Ben Cranfield, Tate). Indeed, in this early work, the first true book on Henry Moore, Read writes that Moore is a 'carver of genius'. 'If carving is never more than 'the articulation of something that already exists in the block', then Henry Moore is not simply a carver', he writes. Scarce indeed with these attributes. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 2pp, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded once. The recipient is not identified. Addressed to 'My dear Sir' and signed 'Herbert Thurston'. He begins by thanking him for 'the nice things you say', and continues: 'I fear I have no defence as regards Samuel Butler. I knew that he had written on the Sonnets and that some people thought highly of his book but I have never seen it. The fact was that I was provoked into talking up the question by some friends who have recently become obsessed by the Oxford theory. I promised them that I would look at their books, and my very inadequate article is the result.' In a postscript he states that he 'must look up S. Butler and "Willie Hughes." The reference in Sonnet 20 seems rather far fetched.' Butler's 'Shakespeare's Sonnets Reconsidered' was published in 1899.
