Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. The Nonpartisan League - Herbert E. Gaston First Edition Harcourt, Brace and Howe, Inc. 1920 "Written in response to anti-NPL books. Author served as officer of Northwest Publishing Co. and editor of Minnesota Daily Star." [Coleman, Lamb 29]; Blind and gilt-stamped blue cloth, 8vo, pp. vii, [1], 325, [3]; Very good book, lacking jacket, small bump mid-spine, light wear to extremities, light foxing to head and fore-edge, faint crease to corner of first few leaves The Nonpartisan League was a left-wing populist/agrarian socialist political party composed primarily of farmers originating in North Dakota in 1915, founded and led by former Socialist Party of America organizer Arthur C. Townley. The party successfully gained political power in North Dakota and implemented progressive social and economic reforms including state ownership of banking and farm related industry to fight out of state corporate and political exploitation. The party spread to Minnesota and backed Charles A. Lindbergh, the aviator's father, for governor in 1918. The party faced aggressive suppression and criticism due to its anti-war stance and Lindbergh was soundly defeated at the polls. A national party was formed but was short-lived due to an agricultural depression following the war. In Minnesota the party would merge with labor interests to form the Farmer-Labor party which would dominate state politics during the Depression years.
