Juan de Dios was a Navajo by birth and was captured by the Spanish in a slaving raid. He was twenty~one years old when Lincoln freed the slaves~Indian as well as Negro. He was ninety years old when he recounted his exciting tales to Professor Hibben. These tales are of some of the most famous Indian hunters of the Old West and are all authentic The stories told to Prof. Hibben by Juan de Dios provide insight into the mind of the Indian as well as insight into the Old West as viewed by the Indian~a truly different perspective. Prof. Hibben actually rode with Juan de Dios to the places where the events took place. A sampling of some of the chapters include: Massacre at Medio Dia, the Purgatorie Grizzly, Dead Man's Stampede, Big Medicine Lion, Big Bucks Sleep Lightly, The Bear that Walked Like a Man, and many more. This highly readable work is a mixture of hunting and Southwestern Americana. DR. FRANK C. HIBBEN was born in 1910. Professor and Curator in the Department of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico, he is also a master hunter. He has hunted in North America, South America, Asia, and Africa and has written the widely read Hunting American Lions and Hunting American Bears. Dr. Hibben is also the author of Digging Up America and The Lost Americans, two 'extremely successful books in the fields of archaeology and anthropology. Never one to slow down, Dr. Hibben is both a trustee of the Museum of Natural History of the State of New Mexico and an advisor to the United States Department of State; these activities are in addition to his regular teaching duties at the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque, where he teaches six graduate courses each semester.
