The volume centres on the two important biographies of Nicolaus Copernicus penned by Starowolski in 1625 and 1627, which played a crucial role in shaping subsequent Copernican literature and historiography. These biographies bring to life the world surrounding Copernicus: his life, revolutionary astronomical work, his contemporaries, friends and adversaries. The book also incorporates Jan Brozek's first-hand observations and reports from his 1618 journey across Copernicus' Warmia. Brozek, a professor of astronomy at the Jagiellonian University and a dedicated Copernican scholar, investigated archives and libraries that preserved vital documents and correspondence related to Copernicus, many of which were later lost during the Polish-Swedish wars. His meticulous notes provide invaluable insights into the original sources and the state of Copernican heritage at that time. Throughout the volume, the complex interactions between Copernicus and Krakow's intellectual environment are explored, including links to the university where Copernicus studied, and figures such as Albert of Brudzewo and Jan of Glogow, believed to be his teachers and influences. The work illuminates not only Copernicus' immediate milieu but also the sustained interest in his work among later generations of scholars like Valentine Fontanus and Martin Radyminski. These figures and many others, though often unknown to English-speaking audiences, are portrayed as active participants in the unfolding story of Copernican science, with their testimonies addressing key unresolved questions. The study critically evaluates several persistent mysteries and misconceptions found in Copernican literature. It addresses important questions such as the true identity of "Jacob Cobilinius", the authorship and influence of early biographies, and the timing of Copernicus' appointment as a canon of Warmia. The volume also tackles issues related to the authorship of various Copernican pamphlets and eulogies, and the possible misattributions and confusions involving figures like Brozek, Starowolski, and others. One of the chapters is dedicated to Rheticus' lost biography of Copernicus. The biographies by Starowolski are presented here for the first time in full English translation from their original Latin, accompanied by a critical analysis that clarifies many inaccuracies and misinterpretations that have long clouded Copernican studies. The volume includes appendices with key primary source materials such as letters by Copernicus and his contemporaries, along with biographical texts by Müller and Giese, enriching the historical context. Overall, this book not only revisits the early history of the dissemination of the heliocentric theory, beginning with Rheticus' Narratio prima in 1540, but also provides an essential resource for understanding the historiographical development of Copernican scholarship in the 17th century. By bridging archival research, biographical study and historiographical critique, it significantly advances the understanding of how Copernicus' legacy was shaped, preserved and transmitted through the efforts of Starowolski, Brozek and their intellectual heirs.
