First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition. Wrappers. Large 4to. Printing of 1000 copies. Very near fine copy, about as new except for a couple of scratches on rear wrapper. The last publication of the Soncino-Gesellschaft. Original wrappers with this German-Jewish bibliophile society's emblem, a tower, on the front wrapper. Collection of responsa from the rabbinical academy Ets Haim in Amsterdam, originally collected and published in Hebrew as the Peri Ez Chajim, and here translated into German. The academy followed the Portuguese (Sephardic) tradition. The printing was begun in 1932 and completed in 1937 (title page is dated 1936). Beautifully designed and printed on fine watermarked paper. We purchased this copy long ago from the Erasmus Boekahndel, whose proprietor was Abraham Horodisch, a founding member of the Soncino Gesellschaft. He told us then that not all copies had the tower on the front wrapper, and further, that the printing was done by the Officina Serpentis of Berlin. The printer could not be acknowledged because of Nazi regulations that forbade "Aryan" firms from printing Jewish materials.
