Loosely inset: Obituary Mr Edgell Rickword, the Times, 16.3.82. Illustrated by portrait frontispiece. Biography of a war poet and radical. Edgell Rickword (1898-1982) joined the Artist Rifles in 1916, and was commissioned into the Royal Berkshire Regiment, serving on the Western Front - he was twice wounded and was awarded the MC, finally being invalided out after losing the sight of one eye. After the war he became an influential editor and literary critic, befriending and promoting many writers at the heart of the Modernist movement. In the 1930s he was a declared radical and communist, visiting Spain during the Civil War as a member of a delegation of writers.
