Unbound. Condition: Near Fine. Albumen print, carte-de-visite measuring 3 1/2 by 2 1/4 inches on slightly larger cardstock mount. Image depicts Silas K. Hocking, bearded, facing the camera, from the chest up. Photographer's blind stamp on recto, "Banks," and imprint on verso, "R. Banks, 73 Market St. and at Rembrandt House, Alexandra Road, Manchester." The photograph and mount are lightly foxed, else in near fine condition. Inscribed by Hocking on the verso: "Yours very truly, Silas K. Hocking." Hocking was a prolific novelist and Methodist preacher. In 1870 he was ordained as a minister, preaching in different parts of England over the next few years. He wrote his first novel, *Alec Green,* while living in Liverpool, in 1878. He gained much fame with his second novel, *Her Benny,* a story of the street children of Liverpool, with sales in excess of a million copies.
