Add to basketPaperback. Condition: New. This is the first biography of the Albanian national hero Scanderbeg (1403-1468), published in England for more than four hundred years. The son of a prince of N Albania, he was educated in the Muslim faith as a hostage at the court of Sultan Murad II. The sultan showered favors on him and gave him the title bey and an army command. In 1443, when the Ottomans indicated they would attack Albania, Scanderbeg escaped to his homeland, abjured Islam, and formed a league of princes among the Albanian chieftains. He proclaimed himself prince of Albania. To resist the Ottomans under Sultan Muhammad II, Scanderbeg received aid at various times from Venice, Naples, Hungary, and the pope. Written by the late Harry Hodgkinson, a former naval intelligence officer who served under Ian Fleming, this engrossing and elegantly crafted book is an attempt to bring the reader closer to this famous historical figure and to set him in the dramatic context of Albania and its history.

Add to basketHardback (No Dust Wrapper.). Condition: Good. Condition Notes: A pleasant enough reading copy. Gently faded at the spine. Edges of the text block lightly tanned. Text complete, clean and tight but a little age-tanned; First edition (first printing). Hardback. Blue boards with gilt titles to the spine; Measures 8" x 5ĵ" (0.4 kg); pp 190; Bibliography; From the preface: "THIS BOOK DOES not attempt to tell yet again the story of the quarrel between Tito and Stalin; that has already been done adequately and often. Instead, I have tried to use their dispute to illuminate the motives and intentions of the Soviet rulers. We need above everything else in politics some general workable theory about Soviet aims and methods; in particular how far war enters into their calculations. Without it, Stalin's policy is an uncharted sea; his actions spring up like unexpected, inexplicable storms threatening to involve our own craft in disaster. The quarrel between Tito and Stalin, though at first sight a local incident, does in fact offer valuable evidence from within on the true springs of action of modern communism. In that incident and in the apparently unrelated publication of Stalin's articles on Linguistics and his revival of the doctrine of 'Coexistence' we have I believe an important clue to explaining the nature of the general crisis of world communism and socialism and of the Soviet Union's own appreciation of its relations with the rest of the world." || The book is on the shelf, ready to be appropriately packed, and posted from the pastoral paradise of Peasedown St. John, Bath, by a real bookseller in a real book shop - with my personal guarantee and beady eye on the Consumer Contracts Regulations. REMEMBER! Buying my copy means the book shop Jack Russells get their supper! My Book #167470 ||.
