Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu.

6 lithographed plates in original hand colour (ca. 210 x 317 mm), mounted on 6 backing cardboards (ca. 330 x 431 mm). Within black borders with German and Hungarian captions. Loose as issued in original printed wrappers (ca. 340 x 455 mm), stored in custom card and cloth chemise with morocco label to upper cover. The life of an Hungarian hussar in full colour: rare, complete set of the splendidly coloured plates prepared by Johann Nepomuk Hoechle (1790-1835), one of the most prolific painters of military themes of his time, lithographed by Josef Kriehuber (1800-76), an artist particularly famous for his high-quality lithographic portraits. The appealing scenes illustrate key events in the career of an Hungarian hussar, beginning with recruitment, showing the young man carousing with his recruiters, drink in hand. The plates further depict exercising on horseback, a night-time ambush, and an action-packed battle scene captioned "a heroic deed", showing the hussars triumphing over bayonet-wielding enemies set against a smoke-filled sky and a town ablaze with fire. In the last two scenes the young hussar is decorated by the Emperor on the battlefield before returning home to his family, who are eager to examine his medal of honour. - Some light surface soiling and creasing, small ink stain to upper cover. A well-preserved specimen of military art, and an homage to the Hungarian hussars. - Bobins 1580. Cf. Schwarz, Anfänge der Lithographie in Österreich, 103. Not in Colas or Lipperheide.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Oblong octavo (7" x 4.25"). A German autograph album containing over 80 elements (laid-down or tipped-in), including many original watercolors, gouache paintings, pen and ink drawings, pencil drawings, autographs and inscriptions, a few prints and photographs, etc., spanning the years from the 1830s to the early 20th Century. Bound in mid-18th Century gilt-decorated leather (with the initials "E.S." stamped in gold on the back board), original binding laid onto cloth boards, red paste paper endleaves, edges stained red. The leather is rubbed, front hinge is loose, a few detached leaves, very good. A remarkable album of original drawings and autographs, most likely kept by a German-speaking artist and illustrator with close ties to the theater. Included is a pencil drawing of Gutle Schnapper Rothschild (and what appears to be a portrait of her husband Karl Mayer), which would link the album to the Rothschild family of bankers in Austria. The album consists of mostly drawings, either tipped-in or mounted on the laid paper leaves. Among the many notable pictures are: two oval ink drawings (double-portraits of two young women and two girls), and one pencil drawing of Frederic the Great, all identified by the album's owner as works by the painter and printmaker Daniel Chodowiecki; a watercolor and charcoal portrait of an actor by Karl Alexander Wilke; two watercolor drawings of troopers in costume by Johann Nepomuk Höchle, and two fine gouache and watercolor portraits of the actor Christian Rub by an unknown artist. Also included is an ink drawing of the escape to Egypt by Karl von Binzer, and a charcoal drawing of a woman reading by Alexander Goltz, drawn directly on an album leaf. Many other portraits and landscape drawings, theater scenes and designs, flowers, etc., and including several inscriptions and autographs. A very charming album of high artistic value. A detailed list of the 80+ illustrations is available on request.

Series of 21 lithographs, ca. 700 x 500 mm each. A complete set of this "extremely popular lithographic series" (cf. Telesko, p. 163) which was first announced in September 1831: originally, a total of twenty prints showing "principal moments" from the life of Emperor Franz II (I) were planned, to be issued at monthly or bi-monthly intervals. Even at this point early versions of the first and second plate were available, and the third would be published in October (cf. Wiener Zeitung 214 [29 Sept. 1831], p. 1214). From 1833 onwards, the title "Hauptmomente" was used (instead of the previous "Lebensmomente" or simply "Momente"), demonstrating that the present set was issued after this point. In what must have been a departure from the artists' original plan, the set was completed after Franz's death with two plates showing the Emperor on his death-bed, bidding his family farewell (the 20th leaf) and his burial in the crypt of the Augustinerkirche (the 21st and final leaf). Hoechle, the illustrator, died only months after Emperor Franz, and he is said to have sketched the latter scene on the spot and finished the drawing as one of his very last works. In commemoration, the lithographer Wolf added a portrait of his late colleage at the picture's far right, with his sketching portfolio under his arm. The original watercolours, measuring but a quarter of the lithographs' size, were part of the Imperial Fideikomissbibliothek until the early 20th century and now repose in the Albertina (cf. Huber-Frischeis, p. 472f.). - "Hoechle's suite offers a selection from the principal events in the life of the emperor, a mixture of ceremonial events (crownings), acts of charity, battles, triumphal entries, encounters with other monarchs, and homages by the estates [.] Wolf's series was instrumental in shaping the posthumous public image of the ruler by creating a canonical epic in pictures" (cf. Telesko, p. 191). - Dust- and waterstained, edges and margins limp and frayed, some tears (occasionally touching the caption). Rarely encountered complete with all plates, as here: only three incomplete sets traced in the last decades' auction records. - Wurzbach IX, 91. Huber-Frischeis/Knieling/Valenta, Die Privatbibliothek Kaiser Franz' I. von Österreich 1784-1835 (2015), p. 472-483. Telesko, Geschichtsraum Österreich I, p. 163, 191 & passim.
