The religious cult Heaven's Gate was founded in 1974; scholars have described it as a combination of New Age, Christian milleniariaism, and UFOology. In late March, 1997, 39 members including the leader Marshall Applewhite, committed mass suicide by ingestion of phenobarital mixed with applesauce or pudding and washed down with vodka.
