8vo. 3 pp. on bifolium. In German, to an unidentified recipient, probably an Italian friend, thanking her and her husband for a card and expressing his best wishes for the New Year. Apparently the recipient has sent a present, which Hoffmann insists is not at all necessary, as all goods can now be acquired in Vienna just as well, at a lower price than in Italy. Everything, he states, has merely become a matter of money, although certain things, such as eyeglasses, cannot be obtained anywhere at all since the Zeiss factory was destroyed. He mentions Josef Frank, who had emigrated to Sweden in 1933 and has now re-appeared in Vienna and, while having no successes of his own to show for, complains that the Wiener Werkstätte are still producing arts and crafts objects to be thrown away a few days later, just as they would be in America. Nevertheless, Hoffmann says he still enjoys his work, admitting that at present only the pottery workshop is operational, as there are no buyers or indeed people interested in art left in Vienna. Finally, Hoffmann asks the recipient to give his regards to Mrs. Gironkoli: "Vielen Dank für Ihre schöne Wunschkarte, bitte auch Herrn Gemahl und ebenfals alles erdenklich Gute für 48. - With censorship stamp.
