Hofmannsthals Briefe legen Zeugnis ab über die letzte Zeit seines Schaffens nach dem Zusammenbruch seines Vaterlandes, der Österreich-Ungarischen Monarchie. Sie lassen die große Einsamkeit erkennen, in der er lebte, die Last auch untrüglicher Voraussicht, die auf ihm lag. Weisheit, Geduld und Güte sprechen aus dem erzieherischen Anteil, den er einem um vieles jüngern Menschen erweist. Von jenen zwanziger Jahren trennen uns Begebenheiten, welche die Welt umfassender verändert haben, ah Jahrhunderte frühern geschichtlichen Ablaufs. Die kurze Spanne Zeit zwischen den beiden großen Kriegen gehört völlig der Vergangenheit an. Wer überlebte, ist durch das inzwischen Geschehene ein anderer geworden. Dies ist der Grund, weshalb wir keine Bedenken trugen, auch die Briefe des Jüngern Korrespondenten zu veröffentlichen; diesem war es innerhalb einer einmaligen menschlichen Konstellation verliehen worden, manches aussprechen zu dürfen, was er ohne diese eine Begegnung verschwiegen hätte. In der Art, wie der Dichter solche Mitteilung gewähren läßt, sie fast unmerkbar, aber unablässig fördert, wird auch seine sonst so oft verhüllte eigenste Natur gegenwärtig: nie legt er die Maßstäbe seiner eigenen Reife an die Äußerungen des andern, nie greift er zur Korrektur, nie unterbricht er die Aussage durch eine Auseinandersetzung. Seine überlegene Erfahrung löst keine Ungeduld in ihm aus, Wiederhören von längst tiefer und strenger Gedachtem veranlaßt ihn nicht zum Eingreifen; ein aufmerksamer Betrachter, läßt er in größter Freiheit gewähren. Losgelöst schon von dem vordergründigen Willen, der noch darnach strebt zu leiten und zu verändern, wirkt in ihm einzig jenes andere mächtigere Wollen, das durch Einverständnis und Vertrauen Leben und Wachstum fördert.
