Originally published in English in 1753, the German language edition of "The Analysis of Beauty" is an innovative and thoroughly modern treatise on art, beauty and life. It describes Hogarth's theories of visual beauty and grace in a manner accessible to the common man of his time. Central to Hogarth's argument was the concept of 'variety' and the way in which nature itself was full of shapes and colors that were geared towards 'entertaining the eye with the pleasure of variety.' Prominent among Hogarth's ideas of beauty was the theory of the Line of Beauty; an S-shaped curved line (serpentine line) that attracted the attention of the viewer and evoked liveliness and movement. "The Analysis of Beauty" formed the intellectual centerpiece of what the historian Ernst Gombrich described as Hogarth's "grim campaign against fashionable taste," which Hogarth himself described as his "War with the Connoisseurs." Bound at rear are two large engraved folded plates (21 x 18" when unfolded). Minor and sporadic scuffing to spine. Some foxing along upper front joint. Minor soiling / darkening along edges of binding. Corners rubbed. Age-toning to title page. Minor to moderate sporadic foxing throughout. Text in German, gothic script. Binding in overall good, interior in good+ to very good condition.
