Fray Diego tomó el hilo argumental de la pasión de Cristo como tronco en el que injertar un resumen de la cosmovisión católica: el Antiguo y el Nuevo Testamento, la Iglesia, los cismas y herejías, los santos y los Padres de la Iglesia, el cielo y el infierno, ángeles victoriosos y demonios intrigantes, los pecados o las virtudes. Todo ello armoniosamente integrado en un conjunto que podría considerarse la Divina Comedia del Barroco.
