This Puritan divine ~ who welded the new Lockean psychology to his forefathers' Calvinism, who fostered an "enthusiastic" spirit basic to an understanding of American culture and character~has increasingly been recognized as a far more profound and sensitive figure than many earlier commentators perceived. In his important examination of the ethics of Jonathan Edwards, Professor Holbrook offers a new and enlightening framework from which to view Edwards's thought. Holbrook distinguishes between theological objectivism, which "points the religious life to its source and goal in God or Being that does not lie at the disposal of man," and theological subjectivism, which "primarily concentrates its attention on the human being, his nature and possibilities, and the products of his social imagination." It is the former pattern of thought~the nearly overwhelming conviction of God's centrality, power, and beauty ~ that provides a unifying theme for all Edwards's works. In Edwards's hands, the religious spirit strained against the bonds of morality and piety, reaching toward a truly aesthetic and truly mystical sensibility.
