Thereafter, he joined the 1st Maryland Confederate Infantry as a private and served in the early Valley Campaign and the battle at First Manassas (Bull Run). Subsequently, he was assigned as a carpenter to build Confederate ironclads at the Richmond Navy yard. This book chronicles his activity and personal observations as well as describing various events of interest occuring in Baltimore and Maryland during the War Between the States."
