Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and three colour plates. Collated complete. A detailed account of the author's own experiences traveling for sport across… Germany, France, Italy, and Russia. St. John writes that, although the sports of the African Bush and the Indian Jungle are now familiar to the Londoner, few Englishmen have had an occasion to meet with so much sport in Germany or across Europe in general. With chapters on the ascent of a mountain in Bavaria, herds of red deer across Italy, adventures of a racehorse on the continent, exploits in Belgium and Hungary, trout fishing and game hunting in France, and a journey from Baden to Warsaw and Moscow. Written by the Honorable Ferdinand St. John, likely the youngest son of Frederick St John, 2nd Viscount Bolingbroke, a British peer and landowner who was famously unhappily married to Diana Spencer, an English noblewoman and celebrated artist. Four leaves of advertisements to the rear. Bound in half calf with marbled boards. Externally, sound with light rubbing and wear to the extremities. Fading to the spine and the odd mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting, predominantly to the first and last few pages. Good.
