First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Honore, Paul (Frontispiece) (illustrator). 1st Edition. A nice, tight and sound copy, showing rather light wear. It is a TRUE first edition as the copyright page shows no additional printings. No dust jacket. In addition to being a respected author, Canfield was also an educational reformer, a social activist, and for 25 years a member of the Book-of-the-Month Club selection committee. First published in 1939, this was the last novel Canfield wrote about her native Vermont. It follows the difficulties faced by Clifford Academy headmaster T.C. Hulme after the academy is willed $1 million with the stipulation that Jews, girls, and locals must be squeezed out. From The New York Times: "Thoughtful, very well written and showing a keen sense of relative values, the novel summarizes clearly and well many of the doubts and difficulties of this most doubtful and very difficult time.".
