Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. Colonel Carter of Cartersville by F. Hopkinson Smith 1891 Humorous Dialect Novel of Virginia. 1891 Second Edition, Published by Houghton Mifflin. Illustrated by the Author and E. W. Kemble. Deaccessioned from the long-Defunct from the American Merchant Marine Library Assoc…iation. X-LIB. F. Hopkinson Smith was a man of multiple talents. One of those talents was the penning of genial novels and travel books. Being an artist of no mean talent, he often illustrated his own books, which is the case with this novel, "Colonel Carter of Cartersville", which was illustrated by Smith, himself, and the well-known illustrator, E. W. Kemble. "Colonel Carter of Cartersville" is a novel in dialect - southern dialect, including that of the various black characters that inhabit the story. It is a genial story, and was considered to reflect a certain truth about Southern life and culture. the book was very popular in its day. Among F. Hopkinson Smith's other talents was that of a highly esteemed engineer. The most famous government construction contract for Smith was the foundation for the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. TITLE : Colonel Carter of Cartersville AUTHOR : F. Hopkinson Smith (Francis Hopkinson Smith, 1838 - 1915) ILLUSTRATIONS : F. Hopkinson Smith and E. W. Kemble IMPRINT : Houghton Mifflin Company PLACE : Boston DATE : (1891) EDITION : Second Printing, with the change of cover materials, title spelling on spine, and illustration placement PROVENANCE : X-Library : Long deaccessioned from the American Merchant Marine Library Association (and with multiple instances of their stamp). I find the provenance of this book interesting, being a record of a long-defunct mariner's library. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Illustrated Trade hardcover; Contains numerous line illustrations; vi + 208 pages; approximately 4 3/4" x 7", quarter-bound cloth on cloth; top edge gilt. The binding is a slate blue cloth spine with boards of a light gray grained linen - title, etc. in gilt on spine, in dark gray on front board (with a gilt panel behind the C in 'Colonel') . This is the Edition of 1891, not a modern reprint. STATUS : OP - Out of Print CONDITION -- Good Plus -- Deaccessioned from a defunct library (American Merchant Marine Library) A used copy, deaccessioned from the Merchant Marine Library Association in New York, and with numerous placements of their stamp (including within the text) - in acceptable antiquarian condition, clean and serviceable with the following imperfections noted: BOARDS : Mild bumps to corner tips, else clean. SPINE : Moderate compression and abrasion to extremities - color of cloth is slightly darkened - title still displays strongly. BINDING : Solid as can be expected - the book has obviously been read and the pages open readily, the binding not being as tight as when issued - but no leaves are detached or loose - there is a just perceptible lean towards the front board. TEXT-BLOCK EDGES : Top edge rubbed, but still fairly bright, else toned but clean. END PAPERS : The library stamps and withdrawn stamp - toning and scattered small spotting. INTERIOR : Modest signs of use throughout - a few scattered small spots and smudges - a few page edge tears (due mainly to careless separating of bolts - but basically clean and presentable throughout. DUST JACKET : None present (Issued?) . E. W. Kemble (illustrator).

Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. None. First Edition. ALMOST FINE FIRST EDITION FIRST ISSUE With the apostrophe in "Carter'sville" on spine and vignette of staircase on page 1. What also makes this book a one-of-a-kind is that it was owned and contains the bookplate of Louise Chandler Moulton, (Louise Chandler Moulton (1835 - August… 10, 1908) was an American poet, story-writer and critic. She was born in 1835, the daughter of Lucius L. Chandler, in Pomfret, Connecticut. In 1855 she married a Boston publisher, William U. Moulton (d. 1898), under whose auspices her earliest literary work had appeared in The True Flag. Her first volume of collected verse and prose, This, That and the Other (1854), was followed by a story, Juno Clifford (1855), and by My Third Book (1859); her literary output was then interrupted until 1873 when she resumed activity with Bed-time Stories, the first of a series of volumes, including Firelight Stories (1883) and Stories told at Twilight (1890). Meanwhile she had taken an important place in American literary society, writing regular critiques for the New York Tribune from 1870 to 1876 and a weekly literary letter for the Sunday issue of the Boston Herald from 1886 to 1892. In 1876 she published a volume of notable Poems (renamed Swallow flights in the English edition of 1877) and visited Europe, where she began close and lasting friendships with leading men and women of letters. Thenceforward she spent the summers in London and the rest of the year in Boston, where her salon was one of the principal resorts of literary talent. In 1889 another volume of verse, In the Garden of Dreams, confirmed her reputation as a poet. She also wrote several volumes of prose fiction, including Miss Eyre from Boston and Other Stories, and some descriptions of travel, including Lazy Tours in Spain (1896). She was well known for the extent of her literary influence, the result of a sympathetic personality combined with fine critical taste. She died in Boston on the 10th of August 1908. The bookplate was executed by Sidney Lawton Smith (1845-1929) in NOV. 1908. He was known as one of the "Little Masters of Copperpate". The books from the library of the Louise Chandler Moulton most likely formed the Pomfret Library in Vermont. It's also very likely that Louise Moulton knew the author of this book as she was also a literary critic and corresponded with many of the author's of the time. A lot of great association between this being a first edition and book owned by Louise Moulton a writer and poet in her own right and a booplete fashioned by well-known artist. Green cloth binding with title in black printing on cover and in gold on the spine. THIS BOOK IS ALMOST FINE. E.W. Kemble and F. Hopkins Smith (Author) (illustrator).
