A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM by William Shakespeare Published by Ernest Nister 1888 illustrated by Julius Hoppner Published in London Printed in Nuremberg Published in 1888, this is a rare and lavishly produced Ernest Nister production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, beautifully illustrated with six stunning chromolithographic plates and twenty seven sepia drawings within the text by the artist Julius Hoppner who was well known for his fairy and fantasy illustrations. Bound in bevelled edged cream cloth boards and highly decorated in gilt with an inset illustration to upper cover, page edges gilded all-round, a large folio format measuring 15 inches by 12 inches approx., with silk endpapers, text printed on thick card paper, the colour illustrations protected with tissue guards. The superior production of the chromolithographic illustrations must be among the best produced of the period. CONDITION The covers have some mild marking and minor bubbling to cloth on rear cover, internally there is noticeable heavy foxing to the opening and closing pages including the endpapers, some straining of one gathering else in good general condition. Book is large and heavy, over two kilos unpacked, overseas shipping costs will be higher than the basic standard one kilo quote.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Good copy which has been rebacked in gold calf with brown spine label. Beveled, decoratively stamped cloth with inset illustration on front cover. This illustration has heavy rubbing and is nearly indecipherable. Front hinge has been firmed up with gold tape. Gift inscription dated "Leadville, Colorado Sept. 28, 1886" to "Mrs. Joe Lewis with the Compliments of Butterfield and Dougan." Some loss of gilt to fore-edges. Dampstain on bottom fore-edge corner which runs throughout, but does not affect text nor does it reach the chromolithographs. Some foxing along top edge of most pages. Heavy edge-wear and some rubbing. Folio. We would be happy to send photos upon request.
