A lovely clean copy of this scarce work originally published in 1846 and then again in the 20th century. This one dates to about 1870-80. *Little known author today, but his poem "Orion" was very highly regarded and he was the first to encourage Elizabeth Barrett Browning and see the merits of Tennyson and Keats. Having sailed to Australia he also has the dubious reputation of being the founding father of the Australian Wine Industry and a company he began is still operating from the same premises. There are two biographies of him. interesting character and this book was the first to depict a friendly talking bear.

Slim 8vo, pp. [iv], 137 [138 adverts], marbled boards; all before title-page removed, front cover stained. "In 1843 Horne published the work for which he is best-known, the three-book epic Orion. This poem, broadly of the Spasmodic school, more credibly imagines the torments and distractions which befall genius than the precise nature of its enduring achievements. It was glowingly reviewed (by, among others, Edgar Allan Poe), and its public reputation was cannily enhanced by Horne's decision to price copies at a farthing, gaining him the nickname the Farthing Poet" (Oxford DNB).

5pp., 4to. On bifolium and single leaf. Good, on lightly-aged paper. On the reverse of the last leaf is the following note in light pencil: 'I believe was written by the Rev. T. Binney for the Christian Examiner but never appeared in that Paper because not rec[eive]d. - William Enington'. The review, with occasional minor deletions and emendations, is headed 'Judas Iscariot, a Miracle Play, with other Poems. By R. H. Horne. Post. 8vo. pp.64.' It begins: 'Some of our readers will be startled by the title of this book; it will require some time for them to recover their surprize, & still more for them to become quite clear that the author is justified in his adventurous task.' It concludes: 'With many doubts as to the propriety of throwing so sacred a subject into a dramatic form, we cannot but acknowledge, that to those who can thoughtfully peruse the book, as an attempt seriously to illustrate truth & character, it is adapted to afford very great pleasure, as it displays in the writer unquestionable genius & diversified ability.'.
