Ralph Cecil Beaton (1853-1921) was a third generation farmer from the area of Shawville, Quebec. Following the death of his father, he took over the family farm. In 1876 he converted to Methodism, after receiving a blessing of complete holiness, which allowed him to act as a lay revivalist. After receiving another blessing, he received the authority to evangelize. Having been sent preaching, he was ultimately censured by the Methodist Church for what was seen to be his excessively exuberant preaching style, which was at odds with the sense of dignity which the Methodist Church wished its evangelists to present. This led him to pursue independent evangelism. He bought a former Baptist Church in Ottawa, and founded the Holiness Movement Church in Canada, of which he established himself as bishop. Having drawn a number of followers to him through his evangelizing for the Methodist Church and books he published, he established a significant following of former Methodists, as well as those from other denominations. Many of his followers came from amongst the farmers and labourers in the rural areas he served. The Holiness Movement Church would go on to establish its own missions, especially to Egypt, as well as a publishing house and seminary, as well as publishing a jouranl called the Holiness Era journal. His followers were known as Hornerites. This collection of songs and music was gathered together by Horner for the purpose of revival services and camp meetings.
