Horst Gerson, ein geborener Berliner, heute Professor für Kunstgeschichte an der Universität Groningen, gehört zu den bekannten Rembrandt-Forschern in den Niederlanden. Er ist der ehemalige Direktor des bemerkenswertesten Forschungsinstitutes seiner Art in der Welt, des niederländischen Instituts für Kunstgeschichte in Den Haag. Im Laufe der 30 Jahre seiner Arbeit mit dieser ungewöhnlichen Sammlung von Foto- und Schriftdokumenten aus der holländischen Kunstgeschichte hat Prof. Gerson den Grundstein zu dieser abschließenden Arbeit über den größten holländischen Maler gelegt. Dieses Buch wurde von traditionsbewußten Firmen in Rembrandts Heimatland hergestellt. Es umfaßt 680 schwarzweiße und 80 farbige Abbildungen in einem hervorragenden Offsetdruck. Fast alle Bilder wurden speziell für diese Ausgabe neu fotografiert. Das Buch ist so ausgestattet, gedruckt und gebunden, daß es lange Zeiten überdauert, für Leute, die mehr wollen als nur darin blättern.
